Papar set for road expansions, new tourism projects
Onn Norshal (centre) presents a memento to Armizan while Susan (second right) and others look on. PAPAR (Apr 28): Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali assured that works to improve road conditions, supply of electricity and water are in progress. He said the government will construct a road from Melinsung to Papar Spur Road, as well as address the traffic congestion in Kinarut. The road in front of Benoni Commercial Centre and Parklane City will also be widened to four lanes to ease traffic flow, he said. Armizan, who is Papar Member of Parliament, said that when officiating the opening of Majestic Ballroom, situated above 10Star Cinemas at Parklane City, here on Monday. The ballroom is operated by 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd. He said the 10Star Cinemas in Papar was launched by the former Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on May 1, 2024, and has since become one of the best performing cinemas among the six operated by the company in Sabah. He said the Majestic Ballroom, which can accommodate 400 guests and 150 guests in its two banquet halls, would complement the existing cinema. He said the ballroom could serve as a activity centre for community programmes, as well as wedding receptions and school events. 'It is a nearer and a lower-cost alternative compared to organizing events in Kota Kinabalu.' Armizan added that the facility augurs well with the initiative to make Papar a new tourism hub in Sabah, as tourism should be supported by an ecosystem that includes hospitality, food and beverage, and events. 'These are all work in progress in Papar. We have a five-star Intercontinental Hotel In Melinsung, and another five-star resort by Mujur Lagenda Sdn Bhd in Kinarut. 'But we cannot just depend on resorts and hotels alone. There needs to be entertainment components like cinema and rural tourism in Papar.' In January this year, he said the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor had officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of a cultural complex in Kinarut, a tourism product that would showcase the ethnic traditional cultures, he said. He said the hotels and tourism products will expose visitors to the uniqueness of Papar. Armizan also thanked WSG Group, especially its managing director Datuk Susan Wong, for her contribution towards economic development in Papar. He hoped that Susan will create more products that could attract people not only from the state capital, but also from Brunei to Papar. Meanwhile, Susan welcomed people from Papar, Beaufort and Keningau to host their events at the Majestic Ballroom. She said the ballroom is divided into two banquet halls, which can accommodate up to 400 guests and 150 guests respectively. She added that a lift is currently being installed and will be ready in a few months' time. The event also saw the signing ceremony between Screen Studio Sdn Bhd and 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd to appoint the latter as the distributor of Impak Maksima 2. Also present was 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Onn Norshal Hamzah.
