Apple iPhone 17 Air: From design to price, all we know about the Samsung Galaxy S25 competitor

Apple's 2025 smartphone lineup may look very different from its current offerings. In the last few months, numerous leaks and rumours have hinted that the tech giant will replace the iPhone 17 Plus with a new iPhone 17 Air, which may be the slimmest iPhone ever. And while nothing is certain at the moment, from battery to design, here's everything we know so far about the iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Air will look different from other models in the series, and thanks to tipsters sharing images of the iPhone 17 Air's dummies, we have an idea of what the slimmest iPhone may look like. As you can see in the X post below, the iPhone 17 Air ditches the vertical camera setup in favour of a huge horizontal, elliptical camera island. IPhone 17 Air, is it a revolution worth buying? — Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) May 26, 2025 While some reports have hinted that the upcoming phone will be around 6mm thick, others have claimed that the device will be 5.5mm thick at its thinnest point. To give you a quick recap, the slimmest Apple product to date is the 2024 iPad Pro, which is just 5.1mm thick. The weight reduction may be attributed to Apple going with a lighter 7000 series aluminium frame that will weigh around 25 grams to 30 grams. This will make it lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which sports a titanium frame. Other components that make up for the weight include the 35-gram OLED screen, a single 48MP camera that weighs 5 to 7 grams. The A19 and logic board, which is said to have a combined weight of 10 grams to 12 grams, a 35-gram battery and a 15-gram glass back. According to the tipster, the iPhone 17 Air will weigh 146 grams, but past reports have claimed that the device will have a weight of 145 grams or 150 grams. This means that the upcoming phone will weigh somewhere between 145 grams to 150 grams. The tipster goes on to claim that the iPhone 17 Air will have a Silicon Carbon battery to make it slimmer, and while the exact battery capacity is unclear, several rumours have hinted that it will be under 3,000mAh. Apple is also said to be offering a battery case for the phone, making the device less appealing. Earlier this year, a report suggested that Apple wanted the iPhone 17 Air to be the first portless iPhone, but it looks like, because of regulatory constraints (mostly from the European Union), the tech giant may be forced to include a USB-C port. Also, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to have the same buttons as the iPhone 16, meaning we will see a Camera Capture button and Action button alongside the standard power and volume buttons. On the display front, the iPhone 17 Air is said to pack a 6.6-inch to 6.7-inch ProMotion OLED screen. Taking a look at the iPhone 17 Air mockups, renders, and dummy units, it is highly likely that the upcoming phone will have a huge elliptical camera bar on the back that houses a single 48MP lens. As for the hardware, Apple is working on the A19 and the A19 Pro chips, but the iPhone 17 Air is said to feature the non-Pro variant. The device is also expected to come with 12GB of RAM. Apple is expected to increase the price of the iPhone 17 series, but it looks like the iPhone 17 Air may cost $899, which is the current price of the iPhone 16 Plus. This means that the slimmest iPhone will be more expensive than the vanilla iPhone 17 but cheaper than the Pro models.

iPhone 17 Air leaks suggest ultra-light design, powerful A19 chip and silicon-carbon battery

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its slimmest and lightest smartphone to date, the iPhone 17 Air, later this year. The device is expected to mark a significant shift in Apple's design and battery technology strategy, incorporating a cutting-edge silicon-carbon battery and a remarkably lightweight build. According to new leaks shared by a well-known anonymous tipster, @MajinBuOfficial, the iPhone 17 Air could be a standout in Apple's 2025 lineup, weighing just 146 grams. This would make it lighter than most current premium smartphones, including some of its Android rivals, while also maintaining a premium feel. Despite its sleek profile, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to house a 2,800mAh silicon-carbon battery—smaller in capacity compared to competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. However, the use of silicon-carbon technology, which offers higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion cells, may enable the handset to deliver a battery performance that surpasses expectations given its size. In terms of design, the iPhone 17 Air is rumoured to feature a frame constructed from 7000 series aluminium alloy—known for its durability and lightweight properties. This choice could contribute up to 30 grams to the total weight, replacing the heavier titanium used in the iPhone 16 Pro models. The 120Hz OLED display and the battery are said to be the heaviest components inside the device, each weighing approximately 35 grams. The handset is tipped to include a single 48MP rear camera, while the front will boast a 24MP selfie camera—suggesting Apple's continued focus on content creators and video-calling quality. The phone is also expected to support Face ID for secure biometric authentication. Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Air will reportedly be powered by Apple's upcoming A19 chipset and paired with 8GB of RAM, aligning it with the performance level of the iPhone 16 Plus. The device is also expected to feature a glass rear panel and will support wireless charging via Apple's MagSafe technology.

iPhone 17 Air gets compared to the iPhone 16 Plus it's replacing in newly leaked photos

The iPhone 17 Air, as you may already know, is rumored to be launching this September alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, as an indirect successor of sorts to the iPhone 16 Plus. So, with that in mind, you may be wondering how it compares to the iPhone 16 Plus it's replacing in Apple's roster. And a new leak over on X delivers just that comparison in the images you can see below. Is iPhone 17 Air a good upgrade? — Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) May 18, 2025 The Plus models have for years been the worst selling of the four mainline iPhone releases, and that's why Apple is replacing the iPhone 16 Plus with the iPhone 17 Air, obviously hoping that the thinness will drive more people to buy this model. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be just 5.5mm (or 5.65mm, depending on which rumor you listen to) thin, and it will allegedly have a ridiculously small 2,800 mAh battery to make up for that. That's much smaller than even the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge's already small 3,900 mAh cell. But worry not for Apple will sell you a battery case that will negate the entire extreme thinness selling point. The iPhone 17 Air will apparently weigh 145g, which is less than the Samsung's 163g, but the iPhone will also only have one camera on the rear vs. the S25 Edge's two. Apple iPhone 16 Plus

Another iPhone 17 dummy unit image appears We can see all four expected models next to each other Some designs are changing on these models Day by day we're getting closer to September and the expected launch of the iPhone 17, and ahead of the official reveal, we've seen several leaked images purporting to show off this series of handsets – including a new picture featuring all four models. This comes from well-known tipster @MajinBuOfficial, who posted an image to social media showing dummy units of what we think are the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Air, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17. They go down in size, starting with the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the biggest. That phone has been tipped to have a 6.9-inch display, with a 6.6-inch screen for the iPhone 17 Air, a 6.3-inch screen for the iPhone 17 Pro, and a 6.1 inch screen for the iPhone 17. That's all largely similar to the current models in terms of screen size, though the iPhone 17 Air is a new addition, so we can't compare it to anything else. It's said to be replacing the iPhone 16 Plus in the line-up, which has a 6.7-inch display. We can see here the rear camera bumps on these iPhones, which in the case of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro, are going to look substantially different to the ones on the current models – as we've seen from other leaked renders. The four phone dummy units shown here all show MagSafe connectors too, apparently confirming that the wireless charging tech will be coming to these handsets. Rather unexpectedly, Apple left it off the iPhone 16e launched in February. Dummy units like these are built based on schematics obtained from the supply chain, and help accessory makers – third-party case manufacturers for example – get their products ready ahead of a phone actually going on sale. As always, we shouldn't take any of this information as being 100% accurate until it's confirmed by Apple. However, a lot of the leaks and rumors we've seen so far are consistent in the designs they're showing for these 2025 iPhones. iPhone 17 display and camera upgrades rumored 5 things I want from the iPhone 17 These are the best iPhones you can buy

The latest iPhone 17 Pro Max leak may have given us another look at its upcoming redesign

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Another iPhone 17 Pro Max image leak has appeared It shows off the expected redesign of the handset The iPhone 17 phones are predicted to arrive in September It looks increasingly likely that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are going to get a significant redesign, compared to the phones that they're replacing, and a new leak gives us another look at the refreshed chassis of the larger model. Prolific tipster @MajinBuOfficial has shared an image of what look like metal molds ready to be used to manufacture the upcoming handset – and we also get the caption "iPhone 17 Pro Max is ready" alongside the picture. We can see the large triple-lens rear camera in the top-left corner of the rear casing, and a cut-out to allow magnetic MagSafe connections for charging. The size of the camera protrusion reflects the larger camera bar that's expected to be on show. Let's hope that the larger camera bar, and the extra space the cameras are taking up, means better quality photos and videos. Apple usually adds some year-on-year upgrades in terms of the iPhone cameras, and another bump would be welcome. We don't get much more from this leak besides another look at the rear casing design, and the update that the phone is "ready" – presumably that means for mass production, because the expected launch date of September 2025 is now fast approaching. There have already been plenty of leaks and rumors swirling around these phones. Aside from the Pro and Pro Max redesign, we should also see faster chipsets inside these handsets, and of course a final version of the yet-to-be-announced iOS 19 on board. Features such as reverse wireless charging have also been rumored, as well as a bump up to 12GB of RAM for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max – perhaps to deal with some extra Apple Intelligence smarts coming down the line. There will apparently be less that's new and exciting when it comes to the standard iPhone 17, though we are expecting a new model in the shape of the iPhone 17 Air – a super-slim model that's being tipped to take over from the iPhone 16 Plus.
