Stillman Valley and North Boone share the BNC softball championship after earning clutch wins Friday
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Big Northern Conference played in girls softball finished up Friday with co-champions. Stillman Valley and North Boone share the title after both teams picked up wins in their final Valley defeated Oregon 5-4, and North Boone defeated Byron the Stillman game in Davis Junction, the Cardinals put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead. The big blow was a two-run homerun by starting pitcher Makenzie tightened things up by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Shortstop Ella Dannhorn hit a two-run homerun. Stillman relief pitcher Kendal Noll prevented Oregon from doing any more worked 5 2/3 innings in the circle for Stillman allowing only four hits and three earned runs while striking out six batters. Addison Adler had three hits to lead Stillman's 11-hit attack. The Cardinals also stole six North Boone's win over Byron, third baseman Khloe Osborne had three hits including a homer, and she drove in five runs. Shortstop Hayden Staver and leftfielder Avarie Torres also had three hits apiece. Pitcher Courtney Troutt went all five innings before the run-rule kicked in. She allowed five hits while striking out seven Stillman Valley and North Boone finished Big Northern Conference play with 15-1 records. Stillman Valley's win against North Boone tightens up Big Northern Conference softball race
DAVIS JUNCTION, Ill. — The race for the Big Northern Conference softball championship couldn't be much tighter than it is right now. North Boone at 11-1 has a slight edge over 10-1 Stillman Valley after Stillman knocked off the Vikings Tuesday 12-2 in six innings North Boone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Vikings didn't score the rest of the game. Stillman pitcher Makenzie Shere was in control. She went all six innings allowing only the two runs. She didn't walk a batter, and she struck out seven. Stillman scored one run in the first inning and then took command with a four-run bottom of the second. The big blow was a two-run home run over the left field fence by catcher Mylee Hulstedt. The Cardinals broke the game open by scoring five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 0-2 lead. Abby Gilliam had a big two-run double that inning. Aubrey Adler had a big day at the plate for Stillman going 4-4 with two RBIs. Third baseman Aurora Lagerhausen had three hits, and she drove in a run. Shortstop Sydney Musial added a pair of hits, and she drove in three runs from the leadoff spot in the lineup. These two teams have now split their two games.
