The commitment was made during the four-day official visit starting Sunday of Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to Malaysia , at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Recognising the potential of their respective economies, Anwar and Muizzu expressed confidence in the continued growth of trade, tourism, and investment activities. Muizzu has also invited Malaysian investors to actively explore the vast investment opportunities in the Maldives across multiple sectors. Noting the global momentum for high-quality halal products and services, Anwar conveyed Malaysia's readiness to share its experience and expertise in developing the halal industry. To expand cultural cooperation, the two leaders welcomed the enhancement of cultural exchanges through literature, performing arts, cultural training, education and other initiatives aimed at promoting greater public awareness of the cultures and histories of Malaysia and the Maldives. Muizzu also expressed his appreciation for Malaysia's positive environment of cooperation and friendship, which has benefited Maldivians travelling to Malaysia for tourism, education, and medical purposes. Both leaders discussed ways to further enhance cooperation to support the welfare of their citizens. This marks the president's inaugural visit to Malaysia since assuming office on November 17, 2023, and underscored the two countries' efforts to reinforce longstanding diplomatic relations established in 1968. During a bilateral meeting held earlier today, the two leaders discussed Malaysia-Maldives ties and exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Muizzu also extended an invitation to Anwar to undertake an official visit to the Maldives at a mutually convenient date, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the close friendship between the two nations. Malaysia, Maldives renew expired health cooperation agreement

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the Maldives today renewed a health cooperation agreement that expired in 2023. The MoU renewal on this supports continued collaboration in areas such as resource development, knowledge exchange, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, traditional medicine, health information technology, food safety, and health tourism. It reflects both countries' commitment to high-quality, standards-based healthcare aligned with technological progress. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Maldives Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel signed the renewal of the MoU in a ceremony held at the Perdana Putra building here, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The ceremony was part of Muizzu's four-day official visit to Malaysia, which began yesterday. A second MoU inked includes cooperation in sports, which aims to enhance collaboration based on reciprocity. It includes promoting participation in sporting events, exchanging information through seminars, developing sports facilities, facilitating athlete and coach exchanges, and cooperating in anti-doping, sports medicine and promoting sports for all. Meanwhile, an MoU on Tourism Cooperation outlining a comprehensive framework for collaboration in several key areas of mutual interest marks a significant step in strengthening Malaysia-Maldives ties. These include joint promotion and marketing of tourism destinations, exchange of expertise and capacity-building through training programmes, development of Muslim-friendly tourism offerings, advancement of business events tourism, promotion of ecotourism, and support for community-based tourism initiatives. The signing of this MoU also marks a significant milestone in Malaysia–Maldives relations and reaffirms the shared commitment of both countries to promote sustainable tourism development. Separately, two Exchange on Notes (EoN) touch on the establishment of Bilateral Consultation between Malaysia and Maldives' Foreign Affairs Ministries. These consultations aim to enhance and strengthen cooperation in key areas such as political, economic, and social relations, as well as to facilitate discussions on regional and international issues of mutual concern. The EoN on the Training of Diplomats, which is the establishment of cooperation between Malaysia and the Maldives in the field of diplomatic training, is set to be carried out through Malaysia's Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations and the Maldives' Foreign Service Institute. This initiative aims to strengthen professional development and capacity-building for diplomats from both countries through a framework of mutual understanding, without creating any legally binding obligations.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today hosted an official luncheon in honour of visiting Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the Seri Perdana Complex here. Muizzu and his delegation, who arrived in Malaysia yesterday for a four-day official visit, were welcomed at the Prime Minister's official residence at 11.25 am. Upon arrival, Muizzu was greeted with a cheerful 'Welcome to Malaysia' from 70 schoolchildren of Sekolah Kebangsaan Presint 9(2). Also present were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. The luncheon followed a bilateral meeting, which took stock of Malaysia-Maldives relations, particularly in trade and investment, the halal industry, education, tourism, and youth and sports. The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and two Exchanges of Notes (EoNs) related to tourism, sports cooperation, and health. Anwar and Muizzu are later scheduled to depart for the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre to attend the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Maldives increased by 4.3 per cent to RM862.7 million (US$189 million) from RM827.3 million (US$180.9 million) in 2023, making the archipelagic state Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian countries.
