Shahidan faces challenge from 3 men for MA's top post

KUALA LUMPUR: Three men will join Malaysia Athletics (MA) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim in the race for the top post in the national association's AGM-cum-election (for 2025-2029 term) on June 15. Datuk Seri Wira Mark Ling (incumbent deputy president), Perak's Datuk Karim Ibrahim and Terengganu's Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh will line up against Shahidan. Shahidan received four nominations, while Mark, the president of Negri Sembilan Athletics, received two nominations. Former MA president Karim and Wan Hisham received one nomination each. Mark, who is also MA coaching committee chairman, is going for broke. If he loses in his presidential bid, he will have no position at all in the national association. Five candidates are vying for the deputy president's post. They are Datuk R. Annamalai, Kari Ibrahim, Mohamat Hasan, Sallehudin Safar and Wan Hisham. Shahidan said: "I'm ready to face the challenges from the three candidates with an open heart. "Malaysia is a democratic country and anyone can challenge for the president's post."

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — National athlete Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin shone on the continental stage today after capturing a bronze medal in the men's discus throw final at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea. Muhammad Irfan delivered a strong performance with a throw of 58.82 metres (m), finishing behind China's Abuduaini Tuergong, who clinched gold with a 63.47m distance while Japan's Masateru Yugami secured silver with a distance of 60.38m. 'Alhamdulillah, a bronze medal was won by Muhammad Irfan in the discus event. The achievement sees Irfan as the third best in Asia!,' Malaysia Athletics said in their official Facebook page. Meanwhile, in the women's shot put final, national athlete Nani Sahirah Maryata placed ninth out of ten participants with her best throw of 15.06m. China dominated the event with Ma Yue (18.26m) and Song Jiayuan (17.78m) winning gold and silver respectively while Taiwan's Ching Yuan Chiang earned the bronze with a 17.42m throw. The championships which began on Tuesday (May 27) will conclude tomorrow. — Bernama

Azeem seventh fastest, advances to NCAA quarters

KUALA LUMPUR: National sprinter Azeem Fahmi did well to qualify for the men's 100m quarter-finals at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday (May 28). Azeem finished third in his heat after clocking 10.26 seconds. T'Mars Mccallum of Tennessee won the heat in 10.16s while Jamarion Stubbs of Alabama was second (10.18s). Azeem's timing was the seventh fastest among 47 sprinters in the event. Only the top-24 made the cut for the quarterfinals which will be held tomorrow (May 30). Malaysia Athletics (MA) technical director John Ballard was pleased with Azeem's performance. "He is in a good frame of mind and we hope he will continue to do well in the quarter-finals," said the Australian coach. The semi-finals and final will be held next week.

Umar powers into 400m final, Zaidatul shines in 100m at Asian meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Reigning Sea Games champion Umar Osman qualified for the men's 400m final at the Asian Championships at the Gumi Civic Stadium in South Korea on Tuesday. The 21-year-old clocked 46.73s to finish third in the semi-finals, behind Qatar's Ammar Ismail Ibrahim (46.05) and Japan's Kentaro Sato (46.19). Sprinter Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli also made it through to the women's 100m final, which will be held on Wednesday. The 31-year-old, who holds the national record of 11.49, ran a season's best 11.65 to finish fourth in her heat, the seventh-fastest overall. Meanwhile, Jonathan Nyepa advanced to the men's 100m semi-finals after clocking 10.59 to place fourth in his heat. However, 2017 Sea Games champion Khairul Hafiz Jantan failed to progress after finishing sixth in his heat with 10.71. Malaysia Athletics (MA) technical director John Ballard said it was Umar's first 400m race this year and praised the youngster for his consistency, having also clocked 46.71s in the heats. "We hope he can continue this good form in the final," said Ballard. "Zaidatul also recorded a season's best, and we're hopeful she can deliver again in the final." Elsewhere, Ng Jing Xuan managed 44.63m to finish 13th in the women's javelin, well below her personal best of 46.94. Jing Hong Khor completed the men's 20km walk in 1:37:03 to finish 15th.
