Meth-fuelled whispers leads to fire that guts Alor Star homes
ALOR STAR: Haunted by whispers while being high on drugs, a recently released offender set off a blaze that gutted three houses in Taman Wira, Mergong, yesterday.
The man, believed to be hallucinating under the influence of methamphetamine, claimed he was instructed by voices to burn paper and place it inside a plastic container in his home.
The fire razed his house before spreading to neighbours homes.
Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said the suspect, in his 30s, was arrested shortly after the incident and has been remanded for four days to assist in investigations.
"Based on our investigation, he claimed he heard whispers telling him to burn paper and place it with a plastic container inside the house, which then caught fire," she told reporters at the district police headquarters today.
She said the suspect, in his 30s, had recently been released from prison after serving time for a drug offence under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act. He also tested positive for methamphetamine.
Police are investigating the case under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief. Offenders face up to five years' jail, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The fire, which broke out at about 8.20pm yesterday, razed three houses and partially damaged another. No injuries were reported.
