QuickCheck: Is May 28 the first time Manchester United has played in Malaysia?
FOOTBALL fans may be buzzing with excitement as Manchester United is set to play in Malaysia. However, some are wondering if this marks the first time the iconic club has visited the country. Is it true that today, Wednesday May 28, is the first time Manchester United is playing in Malaysia? Verdict: FALSE No, this is not the first time Manchester United have played a game in Malaysia. In fact, the upcoming match against the Asean All-Stars at Bukit Jalil National Stadium will mark their return after a 16-year absence. Manchester United has visited Malaysia on pre-season tours multiple times. One notable visit was in July 2001, when they played a Malaysian Select XI at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Manchester United secured a dominant 6-0 victory, with Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring twice, and David Beckham, Andy Cole (two goals) and Luke Chadwick also getting on the scoresheet. This match was a major event, drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans to the stadium, eager to see their favorite stars, such as Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Juan Sebastian Veron, in action. Manchester United returned to Malaysia in July 2009 for another pre-season tour, playing the Malaysia XI in two matches at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. In the first match on July 18, Manchester United won 3-2. Wayne Rooney and Nani put United ahead, but Mohd Amri Yahyah scored twice for Malaysia XI, including a memorable equaliser in the second half, before Michael Owen netted a late winner for United. Two days later, on July 20, United again defeated Malaysia XI, this time with a 2-0 scoreline, the goals coming from Federico Macheda and Michael Owen. Today's match is highly anticipated, with over 60,000 tickets already sold, demonstrating the enduring passion of Malaysian fans for Manchester United. This match, part of the Maybank Challenge Cup, will further solidify the club's long-standing connection with its Asian fanbase. Anwar sends well wishes to Manchester United, ASEAN All-Stars
PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sent his well wishes to the Manchester United and ASEAN All-Stars teams ahead of their friendly match at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium tomorrow, using the phrase 'selamat berentap' -- a Bahasa Melayu expression meaning to wish both sides a spirited contest. In a Facebook post, Anwar, a fan of the English Premier League club, also joked that he remained undecided on which team to support. 'I wish both teams who will be playing at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium a spirited contest. I am still thinking about who to support tomorrow night,' he wrote. According to the post, the Prime Minister met Manchester United chief executive officer Omar Berrada and team manager Ruben Amorim. The meeting was also attended by players and officials from the ASEAN All-Stars, led by Head Coach Kim Sang Sik. Manchester United last played in Malaysia during their 2009 pre-season tour, defeating Malaysia XI 3-2 and 2-0 on July 18 and 20, respectively, at the same venue.

MU-Asean All-Stars clash at Bukit Jalil two days away
MANCHESTER United's long-awaited return to Malaysia is just two days away. The English giants will take on the Asean All-Stars at Bukit Jalil National Stadium this Wednesday in the Maybank Challenge Cup. Kick-off is at 8.45pm. Their last visit was in 2009, when they played two friendlies against Malaysia XI. This year's match forms part of the club's post-season Asian tour, which continues in Hong Kong on May 30. It also marks their first post-season tour under current club management and comes days after their domestic season ends with a home match against Aston Villa. The Maybank Challenge Cup is organised by ProEvents and sanctioned by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in collaboration with the Asean Football Federation (AFF). It is the only Manchester United fixture in the South-East Asian region this year and is expected to draw more than 80,000 local and international fans to the national stadium. United's squad is set to include key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho, Matthijs de Ligt, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund. The club has confirmed that its full senior team and technical staff will travel, along with several youth players. The Asean All-Stars, assembled for this exclusive fixture, will be coached by South Korean Kim Sang-sik who led Vietnam to the Asean Championship title earlier this year. He will face the task of guiding the regional squad against one of the most recognised football clubs in the world. Malaysia will be represented by five players: goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli, rightback Azam Azmi Murad, leftback Declan Lambert, wingback Adib Abd Raop and attacking midfielder Sergio Aguero. The Asean selection reflects a mix of experience and emerging talent from clubs across the region. For fans, the match offers a rare chance to witness the Red Devils live in action in South-East Asia. A First Team Bus Parade offering fans an opportunity to welcome the players before match day will take place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur tomorrow at 2pm. The excitement of the clash will begin with the pre-match event starting at 6.30pm, where fans can expect a lively build-up with music performances by Datuk Ramli Sarip, local favourites Bunkface and Indonesia's pop-rock band Nidji. The match is supported by global partners including Maybank and Malaysia Airlines. Tickets are available at ― By CY LEE
