MCA appoints ex-World Cup winning coach Whatmore as cricket director
THE Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) today appointed former World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore as its director of cricket. MCA described the 71-year-old Australian's appointment as part of its revamped coaching structure, aimed at redefining the country's presence in international cricket. 'Dav Whatmore is a highly accomplished and successful gentleman who has played many roles in various full members. As head coach of Sri Lanka, the country won the ICC (International Cricket Council) World Cup in 1996 and has since produced many positive results. 'It is expected that the appointment will result in Malaysia building a total cricket structure that will connect the dots from lateral development to being a high-performing country,' it said in a statement. As part of the strategic shift, the MCA also announced that former Pakistan international Bilal Asad would lead the national men's team as head coach. It said that Bilal will oversee his charges for several crucial tournaments over the next 18 months, including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup qualifier for the Asia and East Asia Pacific region in Oman from Oct 1-17. The tournament will feature nine teams, with the top three qualifying for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka next February. Meanwhile, MCA president Mahinda Vallipuram, in the same statement, described the refreshed coaching structure as representing their determination to transform Malaysia into a competitive force internationally.

Sports Commissioner says Malaysian cricket leadership still in limbo
KUALA LUMPUR: Though the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) has elected a new set of office bearers, the controversy over its leadership is far from over. Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias has said that the national body's leadership dispute remains unresolved due to legal proceedings initiated by two parties. "As both sides have lodged police reports and taken legal action, we cannot accept or reject the outcome of the BGM (Biennial General Meeting) at this stage," said Suhardi when contacted by Timesport on Sunday. "We must wait for the police to complete their investigations and for the court to determine the status of the association. Only then will we make a final decision based on verified facts." In April, the MCA held an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) to pass a vote of no confidence against its then president Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali. An insider said 11 state affiliates were unhappy with Iqbal's leadership and his unilateral decision-making. Iqbal subsequently resigned, claiming of a coup against him. However, he retracted his resignation letter and argued that the requisition for the EGM — aimed at removing MCA executive committee members — was likely ultra vires (without authority) and conducted in bad faith. He alleged that several individuals nominated for leadership positions were aware of the alleged plot, with one even acting as a representative for the purported signatories. Iqbal, who served two terms as MCA president from 2021, said reports had been lodged with the Sports Commissioner's Office and the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit for immediate intervention. Additional reports were also filed with the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. However, the MCA "new faction" proceeded with their BGM on April 27, during which Mahinda Vallipuram returned as president, having previously held the role from 2015-2021. Malaysian cricket has drawn renewed attention following the allocation of RM1 million for the sport's development under Budget 2025. Under Iqbal's leadership, the MCA hosted the Under-19 women's T20 World Cup from Jan 18-Feb 2. However, Malaysia lost all their four group-stage matches and finished last in the 16-team tournament.

Sarawakian Gordon Chung becomes deputy chief of Malaysian Cricket Association

KUCHING (April 29): Following the recent election of Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) president Azizul Annuar Adenan as deputy president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, another Sarawakian will be holding a key post in a national sports body. Gordon Chung Pei Nan is now the new deputy president of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA). The 43-year-old, who has served as Sarawak Cricket Association secretary since 2010, has also created history by becoming the first Sarawakian to hold the MCA deputy president post which runs from 2025-2027. Prior to this, Chung served as MCA vice president from 2021-23 and 2023-25. 'I want to thank all states for the confidence and votes and I look forward to hitting the ground running, starting with installing back corporate governance, structural reform within the association and a focus on high performance and grass-roots development. 'With the new leadership, l am hoping and expecting to see an improvement in world rankings of Malaysia by the next ICC cycle and a stronger working relationship with MCA stakeholders (states and government),' he told The Borneo Post. Chung also thanked Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for giving him the encouragement, support and endorsement to go for the MCA No. 2 post. A media statement released by SCA said Chung's his appointment is seen as an important step in strengthening the development of cricket in Sarawak. Chung pledged to focus on developing young talent, strengthening cricket infrastructure and improving match hosting at all levels including internationally. Meanwhile, SCA president Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed described Chung's election as proof of Sarawak's ability to produce sports leaders with calibre.
