Malaysians at Harvard can continue studies for now, says govt
Currently-enrolled students at Harvard can continue their studies without interruption following a US Federal Court decision to suspend a US government order. (EPA Images pic) PUTRAJAYA : Malaysian students attending Harvard University in the US can continue their studies without interruption for now, the higher education ministry said today. Students in Harvard's September 2025 intake were advised to deal directly with the university and their sponsors to obtain the latest developments before making further decisions. The ministry's announcement comes after a US Federal Court judge provided relief to over 6,800 international students there by granting a temporary restraining order on Washington's attempt to bar most newly-enrolled international students at Harvard from entering the country. 'The decision enables international students, including Malaysians, to continue studying without interruption for the time being,' the ministry said. In a statement, the ministry said it was monitoring developments closely through the Malaysian education unit in Washington and officials have also contacted sponsors and US education officials. The ministry reminded students to update their optional practical training information and to be careful in all actions involving immigration matters. 'For now, no Malaysian student has encountered any problems or issues with their records with the student and exchange visitor programme or any withdrawal of their visa,' the ministry said.

Anwar pledges easier voting process for Malaysians abroad
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is in Russia for a four-day official visit at the invitation of Russian president Vladimir Putin. (Bernama pic) MOSCOW : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the voting process for Malaysians living abroad will be improved, ensuring that eligible voters can exercise their democratic rights without unnecessary obstacles. He acknowledged that there were eligible voters, including students overseas, who had been unable to cast their votes due to the complicated voting procedures abroad, particularly in countries like Russia. 'There are advanced systems and technologies available now, and we must leverage these tools to streamline and strengthen the overseas voting process. 'I understand that the Election Commission (EC) is an independent body, but why can't the EC ensure that every Malaysian, no matter where they are in the world, can vote? 'We have submitted our views and proposals to the EC… and we will make sure that before the next general election, a proper and accessible process is in place,' Anwar said during a question-and-answer session with Malaysians in Russia, held as part of his official visit to the country. Anwar was responding to concerns shared by Malaysian students in Russia, who highlighted the challenges they faced in voting and accessing government-related election websites while abroad. The prime minister arrived in Moscow for a four-day official visit on Tuesday. M'sia must be positioned to benefit if Russia-US ties improve, says minister
Foreign minister Mohamad Hasan said relations between Malaysia and Russia have not flourished as much as they could have. MOSCOW : Malaysia must be prepared to seize emerging opportunities in trade and cooperation, particularly if geopolitical tensions between Russia and the US ease, says foreign minister Mohamad Hasan. He said Russia presented vast untapped opportunities due to its diverse resources and technological strengths, including in agriculture and other sectors. 'Malaysia and Russia have long-standing relations, but they haven't flourished as much as they could have due to the unilateral sanctions imposed on Russia by the US,' he said. 'There is much potential here, and we must be ready to explore these opportunities. Should US-Russia relations improve, we need to be positioned to benefit from it. 'Washington's current approach differs from (administrations) before, and I believe if ties normalise, Malaysia stands to gain significantly,' he said at a dinner with Malaysians in Russia on Tuesday. The dinner was in conjunction with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Russia, which began on Tuesday. Also present were agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu; science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang; higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir; and plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani. In his speech, Mohamad encouraged Malaysian students in Russia to uphold the nation's good name and return to contribute to Malaysia upon completing their studies, particularly in critical sectors such as medicine and engineering. Chang meanwhile stressed the importance of skilled talent to drive Malaysia's ambition of becoming a high-tech nation by 2030. 'With global uncertainties, it's a challenge to attract high quality, technology-driven and capital-intensive investments. We need a highly skilled workforce, both locally and from Malaysians abroad like all of you here,' he said. In his brief speech, Johari said he had been appointed as coordinating minister for Russia, a role aimed at facilitating trade engagement with Russia amid the ongoing sanctions. Anwar arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for a four-day official visit at the invitation of Russian president Vladimir Putin. The visit includes engagements in Moscow and Kazan.
