B-Com graduate arrested for breaking into Bengaluru pub, looting cash: Report

A 29-year-old man from Odisha, who allegedly broke into a high-end pub in Bengaluru and fled with ₹50,000 in cash, has been arrested by Subramanyanagar police after an intensive four-day probe, The New Indian Express reported. The theft, which took place during the early hours of May 12 at Geometry Brewery and Kitchen in Rajajinagar, had sparked concern among residents of north Bengaluru. The accused, identified as Malipuram Dilip Kumar alias Tuttu, a BCom graduate and native of Jajpur, Odisha, was tracked down through a combination of CCTV footage analysis and call data monitoring. Police apprehended him in his hometown on May 16 and brought him back to Bengaluru the next evening following a transit remand. After the break-in, he left for Odisha and reportedly used the stolen cash for the ceremony. Officers recovered ₹6,000 and the cutting plier he allegedly used during the burglary, though no firearm was found in his possession. The man, police say, was familiar with Bengaluru's hospitality scene. He first moved to the city in 2016 seeking employment and had stints at various pubs and restaurants across Jayanagar, JP Nagar, and Koramangala. He was arrested in 2021 by Koramangala police in connection with an attempted theft but was later released on bail. Though he returned to Odisha briefly, he came back to Bengaluru in November 2024, only to quit another hotel job in March 2025 due to low pay. 'Under pressure to arrange money for his sister's marriage, he decided to commit theft at a place he was familiar with,' said a police officer involved in the investigation. Officers said they examined over 150 CCTV cameras to trace the suspect's movement, which ultimately led them to his hometown. Dilip is currently in police custody and is expected to be produced before a magistrate on Friday. Bengaluru pub thief nabbed from Odisha, armed robbery theory ruled out

Bengaluru: In the early hours of May 12, the city witnessed tense moments as a posse of cops, including armed commandos and a bomb detection squad, visited the premises of Geometry Brewery and Kitchen in Rajajinagar. The reason: Security guards had called the cops, saying a gun-wielding man had taken Rs 50,000 cash from the pub. With India-Pakistan tensions running high at the time, police were in no mood to take risks. However, after a search lasting over six hours, the cops and commandos returned empty-handed. A case of robbery was registered at Subramanyanagar police station. Now, police have arrested the robber, identified as Malipuram Dilip Kumar alias Tuttu. Police said Kumar never had a gun, pistol, or any other weapon with him at the time, and the security guards might have mistaken the hand glove, which Kumar had folded in his right palm, for a firearm. Coming to the city from Odisha in search of work a few years back, Kumar worked in different hotels and pubs. However, for the last five months, he was without a job. Meanwhile, his younger sister was getting married in Odisha and his parents had sought financial help from him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! "Kumar regularly visited Iskcon in Rajajinagar, and this pub is in the same area. He visited it twice in the first week of May and made a mental note of its structure. On May 10, he occupied a PG accommodation in Subramanyanagar. In the early hours of May 12, he broke into the pub through the back door and disconnected the CCTV cameras. Then, he stole money from the owner's chamber. He threatened the security guards who arrived, but the latter swiftly locked the door from outside. However, Kumar managed to slide down the building from a window," an investigating officer said. On the same day, using the stolen money, he flew to Odisha. However, Kumar had booked an auto using an app in the city, and this helped cops trace him. "Surrounding area CCTV footage showed the suspect running away from the pub and boarding an auto. During questioning, the auto driver shared Kumar's details. We travelled to Odisha and arrested him from his house. By then, his sister's marriage was over," the officer said.
