Jon Scheyer updates Maliq Brown injury status before Duke vs Arizona in 2025 NCAA Tournament

NEWARK, N.J. — Maliq Brown 'could be available' for Duke basketball in its NCAA Tournament game against Arizona, head coach Jon Scheyer said Wednesday afternoon. "It's day-to-day with Maliq," Scheyer said. "There's a chance he could be available (Thursday)," said Scheyer, whose top-seeded Blue Devils (33-3) face No. 4 seed Arizona (24-2) on Thursday (9:39 p.m., CBS) in a Sweet 16 matchup at Prudential Center. Duke had a 15-minute portion of its practice open for media members Wednesday, spending most of that time stretching and shooting around. Brown had a sleeve on his left shoulder, but he participated in stretching and was shooting 3-pointers with the Blue Devils. That's progress for Brown, who was wearing warmup gear and watching his teammates go through a 40-minute open practice in Raleigh ahead of Duke's opening game in March Madness. Advertisement LOVE VS. He missed four games earlier in the season with a knee injury and missed eight more with a dislocated shoulder, which he re-injured in Duke's opening game of the ACC Tournament against Georgia Tech. With his ability as a defensive disruptor and underrated playmaking, the 6-foot-9 forward has been an X-factor for the Blue Devils throughout the season. He leads the team in deflections as arguably the most versatile defender on the roster, capable of switching all five positions. Advertisement Rodd Baxley covers Duke, North Carolina and N.C. Maliq Brown could return from a shoulder injury to play in Duke's Sweet 16 game against Arizona

Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Duke's Maliq Brown, out since the ACC Tournament with a shoulder injury, is a 'maybe' for the Blue Devils' Sweet 16 game against Arizona on Thursday. Coach Jon Scheyer on Wednesday called Brown a 'game-time decision' for the East Regional semifinal. Brown hasn't played in two weeks since he left the first half of Duke's ACC Tournament quarterfinal game against Georgia Tech. He also missed games this season with toe and knee injuries. Brown averaged 2.7 points and 4.1 rebounds this season for top-seeded Duke. The 6-foot-9 junior forward has defensive value going far beyond his modest stats because of his ability to move his feet, switch screens, defend multiple positions and use his length to create deflections. ___ AP March Madness bracket: and coverage: Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Duke gets No. 1 regional seed for March Madness, headlines East with Alabama, Wisconsin, Arizona

Duke headlines the NCAA Tournament's East Region as a No. 1 seed and will open the push for the program's sixth national title with a short drive from campus. The Blue Devils (31-3) begin play Friday in Raleigh, a familiar location as home to Atlantic Coast Conference neighbor N.C. State and roughly a 30-minute drive east of Duke's campus in Durham. They'll face the winner of a First Four matchup between American and Mount St. Mary's. Alabama is the 2-seed in the bracket as it chases a second straight Final Four appearance, followed by Wisconsin, Arizona and Oregon. The other teams are: BYU, Saint Mary's, Mississippi State, Baylor, Vanderbilt, VCU, Liberty, Akron, Montana and Robert Morris. Duke enters the tournament having swept the Atlantic Coast Conference outright regular-season and tournament titles for the first time since 2006. But the latter came with freshman star Cooper Flagg (ankle) and valuable defender Maliq Brown (shoulder) going down with injuries in the quarterfinal, forcing the Blue Devils to play shorthanded on the way to their ACC-record 23rd title by beating No. 13 Louisville in Saturday night's final. Coach Jon Scheyer said afterward that Flagg — named last week — is trending toward being available 'right away' in the NCAAs with the sprained left ankle. Brown's prognosis is more uncertain; it's a reinjury after he recently returned from missing roughly three weeks with a dislocated left shoulder. The Blue Devils are a No. 1 seed for the 15th time and will chase the program's 18th trip to the Final Four. The regionals will be held in Newark, New Jersey, not far from where Duke has frequently played nonconference games at New York's Madison Square Garden — including for a 43-point win against NCAA-bound Illinois on Feb. 22. The Sweet 16 games will take place March 27, with the regional final coming two days later. ___
