TMMK protests against Waqf Act in Chennai
Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam organised a protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act recently passed in both houses of the Parliament for being against the interests of the Muslim community in Chennai on Tuesday.
Manithaneya Makkal Katchi founder and MLA, Professor Jawahirullah and Manapparai MLA, P. Abdul Samad, participated in the protest and courted arrest along with the cadre.
Speaking at the event, Professor Jawahirullah said the protest was to save the Constitution of India and that the recent law passed in the parliament violates it. 'There is no difference of opinion that Waqf properties must be safeguarded. The Article 26 of Constitution of India, which was framed in the constituent assembly by our freedom fighters, says that every religious group in the country has a right to buy, use and manage properties. The Modi government passed the bill in the dead of the night, which takes away that right. We are protesting against it,' he said.
