‘I killed my wife, and this is her head': Bengaluru man surrenders at police station after chilling murder

Police officers at the Suryanagar station in Bengaluru were left stunned in the early hours of Saturday when a man arrived carrying his wife's severed head on a scooter and calmly surrendered. The incident unfolded around 1 am when M Shankar, 26, pulled up on a gearless scooter outside the police station. Three constables and an assistant sub-inspector, who were preparing for night patrol, noticed the severed head of a woman placed on the vehicle's footboard. 'We asked who he was and why he had come. Calmly, he said in Kannada, 'I've come to surrender. I killed my wife, and this is her head,' recalled one of the officers present at the police station. The victim was identified as S Manasa, 26. The couple lived in Heelalige and worked in an industrial area—Shankar as an assistant manager at a battery manufacturing unit in Bommanahalli, and Manasa at a nearby factory. According to police sources, the marriage had been troubled due to Shankar's suspicions about his wife's alleged relationship with a co-worker. The situation escalated on May 3 when Shankar claimed he caught Manasa with her alleged lover at their home after returning early from work. Following this incident, Manasa left home and moved into a paying guest accommodation near her workplace, leaving their three-year-old daughter with her parents in Hebbagodi. Shankar subsequently filed a missing person complaint at the same police station, where he would later surrender. Police officers contacted Manasa and facilitated a brief mediation session, after which she returned home with Shankar in what appeared to be an attempt at reconciliation. However, tensions boiled over again on Friday evening. Neighbours reported hearing a heated argument between the couple, followed by sounds of violence. During the altercation, Shankar allegedly retrieved a knife from the kitchen and beheaded his wife. Police sources said Shankar sat beside the body for some time before deciding to surrender. He then placed the severed head on his scooter and rode to the police station. Shankar has been arrested and charged with murder. The couple's three-year-old daughter is now in the care of her maternal grandparents.

Man rides to police station at midnight with wife's severed head

1 2 Bengaluru: Cops at Suryanagar station in Bengaluru Urban district were shocked when a young man entered their premises on a gearless scooter, with a severed head placed near his legs, in the wee hours of Saturday. Three police constables and an assistant sub-inspector, who were on night patrol, were standing outside the police station. They were scheduled to patrol in different directions and were getting ready to leave when the man stopped his vehicle near the station compound. A cop said: "We asked who he was and what had brought him to the station. In Kannada, he replied, 'I have come to surrender. I killed my wife, and here is her head.'" The cops looked down and saw the severed head on the mat, blood spilt all over it. The drama unfolded around 1am Saturday, when M Shankar, 26, arrived at the station and said he had cut his wife S Manasa's head following a fight over an alleged affair. That day, Shankar had intentionally returned home earlier than usual. The following day, Manasa returned to her parents. However, leaving her daughter with them, she shifted to a PG accommodation near her factory. Meanwhile, Shankar approached Suryanagar police, stating his wife was missing. Police called Manasa's phone and found her to be at the PG home. Manasa arrived at the station, and cops managed to send her back to Shankar. But the couple fought again on Friday evening, resulting in the gruesome killing, police said. "According to neighbours, they heard Shankar and Manasa fighting and later attacking each other. Shankar took the butcher's knife from the kitchen and severed her head. He sat near the beheaded body for some time and then decided to ride to the police station," the cop said.

Band Anahatha's music connects to listeners' hearts

Band Anahatha is a rare multilingual band from Hyderabad, featuring two female lead singers. 'When I founded the group in April 2022, it was uncommon to have two women as the main vocalists in music bands,' shares Ananya Bhaskar. Ananya, one of the lead singers and the founder of the band, is joined by Manasa Seshu (lead singer), Samuel Sanjeev (drummer), Smaran Vadakoppu (lead guitarist), Rajesh Korukonda (keyboardist), Rajeev James (bassist), and John Wesley (sound engineer). Multilingual ensemble This multilingual ensemble has performed at club nights, corporate events, private weddings, college festivals, movie audio launches, and award ceremonies. Seamlessly moving across genres — from soulful melodies to high-energy dance numbers — their performances blend Telugu and Hindi classics with a mix of Tamil, Punjabi, and English hits. Ananya explains that the band's name has a connection to the heart: 'Among the seven chakras in the human body, 'Anahatha' is the heart chakra, and we hope our music resonates closely with listeners' hearts.' Dream come true The band is the realisation of Ananya's five-year-old dream. An engineering graduate and Carnatic music enthusiast, she was first inspired during a birthday celebration at Amnesia pub in 2017, where the musicians' lively performance left a lasting impression. Motivated to create similar memories for music lovers, she nurtured a quiet ambition to form her own band. After changing two jobs, she finally quit to pursue her dream in March 2020. Ananya and Manasa began their musical journeys through reality shows such as Zee Telugu's Sa Re Ga Ma Paa and Indian Idol (Manasa was also a finalist in the most recent edition of Sa Re Ga Ma Paa). Although these experiences gave her the confidence to take the plunge into music full-time, the initial months were challenging and difficult to sustain. 'When I started out, it was rare to have two female lead singers,' she says. 'Some even suggested, 'Oka male singer nu band lo add chesukondi' (Why don't you add a male singer to the band?)' The band survived, though not without changes to the line-up over three years. 'It's not easy bringing six different minds together, as each person has their own aspirations. Some had to leave, but we are all on good terms,' Ananya adds. Classic and contemporary Known for their covers of popular film music, Band Anahatha's two-hour 'contemporary and classic' set features a mix of melodies and upbeat numbers. Performing at college campuses has given them an opportunity to connect with students. At one such event at IIIT Hyderabad, the band experienced what they describe as 'insane energy', with the crowd singing along and sending appreciative messages scribbled on tissues. The band plans to introduce a blend of classical fusion into their concerts. 'Anahatha is not just a band; it's a commitment to delivering musical excellence, creating memories with every note, and leaving a lasting impression on every audience,' says Ananya.
