Match Report: Bayern Munich Women 2-1 Man United Women
Manchester United Women lost the final of the World Sevens tournament 1-2 to Bayern Munich. The Red Devils confidently dispatched of Manchester City in the semi-final to set up an epic encounter with the free-flowing Germans who beat Paris Saint-Germain 5-0. Advertisement Both sides took some time to settle into the game but it was Bayern who almost opened the scoring. After five minutes, Pernille Harder snuck in at the front post but was well denied by an inspired Phallon Tullis-Joyce from close-range. Moments later United had the crossbar to thank as Magdalena Eriksson hit the bar with a fine volley from a corner. United had to be patient but had their first big moment after 10 minutes when great pressing from Elisbeth Terland resulted in Celine Bizet being presented with an open goal. Nonetheless, the Bayern keeper Maria Luisa Grohs made an outstanding reaction stop to deny United going ahead in the final. Advertisement On 13 minutes Caroline Simon almost fired the Germans in front with a well struck free kick but it belted off the base of Tullis-Joyce's post to keep the scores level. United finally got their noses in front just before half-time when Simi Awujo scored her third of the tournament. Melvine Malard kept hold of the ball well and found the Canadian in the box who took a touch and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. The half-time whistle blew and United were 15 minutes from glory. Bayern almost equalised after just two minutes of the second period but a fantastic double stop by Tullis-Joyce kept United ahead. Advertisement Marc Skinner's side's resistance finally gave way in the 22nd minute when a cross from Harder was expertly converted by Momoko Tanikawa to make it 1-1. After 24 minutes, United's American keeper made another spectacular save by keeping out Bayern from close range after a cleverly worked free kick. She immediately launched the ball up field and found Lisa Naalsund but she could only tamely drag her effort wide. In a very nervy final, it took a moment of magic to give Bayern the lead. On 26 minutes Sarah Zadrazil expertly held the ball up, spun and smashed in an unstoppable drive into the side netting to put the Bavarians in front. Advertisement United pushed for an equaliser but came up short and Bayern were champions. Nonetheless, it was a fine three day experience for the Women's team and they did the club proud with their efforts. Moreover, by finishing runner ups, United bagged $1 million and will hope they can put this to good use to help enhance the squad to compete in next year's Champions League. United will also take heart in the fact that their youngster Awujo was crowned the 'breakout star' of the tournament and she will hope to gain more first team minutes next season at the club. Match Report: Man United Women 2-2 Paris Saint-Germain Women (7-6 on pens)
Manchester United Women beat Paris Saint-Germain on penalties to top their group in the Women Sevens Football series in Portugal. The Red Devils had previously vanquished AS Roma 3-2 and SL Benfica 3-1 but got off to the worst possible start in this match. Advertisement After just 12 seconds, Sakina Karchaoui swept in a flowing move that cut United to ribbons. The 29 year almost made matters worse for the Red Devils, as she went one on one with back-up keeper Safia Middleton-Patel but lifted the ball the wrong side of the post. This young United side never lie down however and after five minutes were level. Captain Maya Le Tissier won the ball in the centre of the park and fired the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-1. Clearly two of the better teams in the tournament, they struggled to unlock each other's defences over the course of the first half. United were largely restricted to long-range efforts with Celine Bizet wildly firing over just before half-time. Advertisement PSG got off to another lightning fast start in the second half however, with Jennifer Echegini winning the ball in the area and firing past Middleton-Patel to restore the French club's lead. United tried to respond but Aoife Mannion's shot from distance was easily saved. Marc Skinner's side were able to draw themselves level just minutes later when Jess Simpson guided in a low cross across goal to make it 2-2. Both sides pushed for a later winner and Melvine Malard came closest for the Red Devils with just two minutes remaining. Unfortunately, she powered over a header from close-range. PSG almost grabbed a winner as the final seconds ticked by but their last ditch effort was well saved by Middleton-Patel. Advertisement United then played an extra time of five minutes where a golden goal would have won the match. Nonetheless, neither team could find a winner and it went to penalties. Interestingly, Kayla Rendall was brought on for a keeper change for the penalty shootout. Both teams kept their nerve until the seventh PSG penalty rattled the crossbar, giving the Red Devils a 7-6 win in the shootout. The victory meant United topped the group ahead of the French giants and will now face Manchester City in the semi-final later today at 16.30 UK time. The other semi-final will take place between PSG and Bayern Munich with the final following later tonight. Featured image Gualter Fatia via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @

Manchester United confirmed to take part in inaugural World Sevens Football tournament
Manchester United Women will take part in the inaugural World Sevens Football (W7F) series event in Portugal next month, organisers have confirmed. The Red Devils could yet be joined by Chelsea or Arsenal in the lucrative new eight-team tournament, which has a total prize pot of five million US dollars (£3.8million). W7F's head of football Adrian Jacob refused to rule out any of the Champions League's final four participating, which leaves open the possibility of one or even both the London clubs being involved should they fail to reach the final. The W7F series opener takes place between May 21 and 23 in Estoril, close in proximity and date to the Champions League final in Lisbon on May 24. Three other teams - Ajax, Bayern Munich and Benfica - were confirmed alongside Manchester United on Thursday. Jacob has also not ruled out the possibility of a club from the United States' National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) taking part. The prize on offer to the winners will be 2.5m US dollars (£1.9m) - significantly more than the current maximum on offer for winning the Women's Champions League, and Jacob anticipates those competing will take it seriously. "We haven't got the actual rosters yet, but they will be first-team squads," he said. "A lot of these clubs are very worldwide and global in their make-up, so we'd expect first team players. However, there is also the point that the games are much, much smaller or much shorter." Asked whether he anticipated United's England stars Ella Toone and Grace Clinton would participate, Jacob added: "I would expect them to come, how much they play is a different matter. But I would expect them definitely to come." We're turning up the heat in Portugal this May with the debut of World Sevens Football and the buzz is already building from the sidelines!🎟️ TICKETS ON SALE NOW! — World Sevens Football (@worldsevens_) April 17, 2025 United head coach Marc Skinner said: "This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of something new for the women's game. "Our only focus right now is on finishing the domestic season as strongly as possible in the WSL and the FA Cup; then we can travel to Portugal to enjoy what promises to be an entertaining three days of fast, fun, seven-a-side football." Teams will be able to select squads of up to 25 players for the tournament, with 14 nominated for each match. The second series is slated for November and December in North America, with Jacob confirming the ultimate goal is to stage five events each year. Streaming platform DAZN is the series' global media partner but Jacob said it was "TBC" whether competing clubs may also be able to stream on their own channels. The funding for the series comes from investors Jennifer and Scott Mackesy, and is arguably the most significant competition involving first-team players in either men's or women's football so far established outside of FIFA and UEFA authority, which only have jurisdiction over the 11-a-side game. Jacob said: "I was with one of the clubs on Wednesday and one of them made an amazing point - this is the first example where women's football has actually been innovative. "Every time we follow the same routine, the same pattern that men's football does of playing 11-a-side, having this tournament, that tournament, and doing really what's been happening elsewhere and following what the men have done. "We are trying to not completely change the game, but move the game forward and amplify the game and show that we can do different things with it. We don't have to follow the same route everyone else does."

Chelsea Women vs Manchester United Women prediction: Blues to wrap up domestic treble
Chelsea Women vs Manchester United Women Betting Tips Chelsea face Manchester United in the Women's FA Cup final on Sunday afternoon, with Sonia Bompastor's side looking to compete an impressive domestic treble at Wembley (1.30pm, BBC One). The Blues went through the league campaign undefeated as they won a sixth WSL title in a brilliant maiden campaign for Bompastor, who also guided the London outfit to the Women's League Cup. The only disappointment was the Champions League humiliation at the hands of Barcelona, but the pain of that defeat can continue to be scrubbed away with an FA Cup win on Sunday. It's been an altogether more disappointing season for United, who briefly looked like mounting a title challenge before fading and finishing fourth. But there's still a chance of back-to-back FA Cup victories, with Marc Skinner's side taking the experience of last season's 4-0 win over Tottenham into Sunday's game at Wembley. Given the gap in quality between the two sides throughout the league season, Chelsea are unsurprisingly 13/20 favourites with betting sites, with United priced at 15/4 to retain the trophy. Chelsea vs Manchester United Betting Preview: Blue Day at Wembley The last three matches between these sides have both been won by Chelsea, with Bompastor's side last losing to United in this very competition at the semi-final stage last season. Nevertheless, the Blues have largely dominated the head-to-head with United, winning nine and drawing just one of the previous 10 meetings in the league. Anything can happen in a cup final, but the Blues have been so strong domestically that it's hard to beat against them. United aren't carrying much momentum into the final after a run of four games without a win that includes a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea and it's hard to see anything other than blue ribbons being attached to the Women's FA Cup trophy. Chelsea vs Manchester United prediction 1: Chelsea to win - 13/20 William Hill Chelsea vs Manchester United Best Bets: Final Flourish of Goals The last two matches between these sides have finished 1-0 in Chelsea's favour, though last season's matches finished 6-0 and 3-1 to Chelsea in the league, and 2-1 to United in the FA Cup. Chelsea have scored one goal in each of their last three league matches, all of which have been 1-0 victories, but they'll be facing a United defence here that conceded six goals in their final two WSL matches. United did manage to score five in response in those two games and away from home, they've been pretty regular scorers all season, suggesting they can at least give their fans something to cheer about. The hope is there will be a few more goals at Wembley on Sunday than we've seen in the league meetings between these teams and football betting sites would appear to agree with over 2.5 goals a best-price of 4/5.
