Elite DB Brody Jennings on Miami official: 'I had the time of my life'

Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin High School athlete Brody Jennings spent last weekend at Miami for his official visit under tragic circumstances. His father, Bradley, passed away just before the trip was to begin for the family. The group would follow through and see Coral Gables once more as the Hurricane staff worked to make the weekend as uplifting as possible. Advertisement "My dad passed a few days ago, so I couldn't really think," Jennings told local media. "I came on the visit and had the time of my life. I came here to have fun. It was about football, but more about family and football at the same time. He (Mario Cristobal) is not just a football guy, he's a family guy -- all the coaches are family guys. Father figures. "My dad wanted me to be strong. He liked Miami a lot. He liked the school a lot and I like it a lot. We wanted to still see everything." Jennings has considerable connections to the area and Miami program itself, with two siblings attending UM, including his sister currently on the track team. The bigger picture with the people and the place all came together for a memorable time on campus. Advertisement "It's been great," he said. "I don't know if any other schools are topping this official visit. Not even in just seeing everything, but the coaches. Coach Cristobal is a great coach. Coach (Will) Harris ad Coach (Zac) Etheridge -- great coaches, and the whole staff was great. "I've been here multiple times to see what the program is about is something serious. It's like that for real. It's a great program to play in with great people to be around. My family is from Miami. They've been down before and they enjoyed the visit, too. They enjoy the school and they're Miami Hurricanes fans already, so it would be great playing around the hometown of my parents." He remains on board with the Big Ten power, but all involved know this recruitment has more layers to be determined. Advertisement "It's gonna come down to the wire," he said. "That's not gonna stop Miami from recruiting me. Miami is coming really hard, Michigan is still coming hard. Miami wants me really bad. "Miami is a great school. Academics, private school. I could be successful with the school and life after football. There is a lot to offer." Florida is set to host Jennings this weekend. Georgia and Michigan get the next two weekends of official visits later this month. The four-star recruit says Sherrone Moore and company are keeping an open mind as visits continue to go down. "They know great players will visit other schools," Jennings said. "They know how hard I worked to get here, so they support me even though other schools will be on me." Marcus Benjamin contributed to this report.

Turning point in Jacksonville‘s fight against gang violence? 6 arrested in child's murder

Two teenagers were arrested Friday in Jacksonville for the death of 7-year-old Breon Allen, bringing the total number of arrests up to six. The young victim's death has raised questions about the state of gang violence in Jacksonville, with Sheriff T.K. Waters responding to concerns about a potential turning point in the city's fight against gang activity. 'Breon was walking outside with someone involved in this lifestyle,' said Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters. Sheriff TK Waters is referring to Allen's cousin, Lafayette Mango Jr. Breon Allen died in the shooting that was targeting Mango, known to be associated with a rival gang. They were walking together on Commonwealth Avenue on January 24th when gunshots were fired towards them. Since then, six arrests have been made in connection to that shooting, including two on Friday: 17-year-olds Donte McGhee and Tavaris Kelly. We asked Sheriff TK Waters if these gang arrests may signal a turning point for gang violence in the city. 'I think we made a lot of strides in that direction for a while now,' Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters said. An ex-gang member in the Moncrief and Ken Knight community Nate Thomas, better known as Uncle Nate, said there hasn't been an increase in gang violence on the northside. But he said he doesn't believe there will be a major decrease in gang activity even with the Sheriff's Office's recent efforts. Read: Trial delayed for suspected Jacksonville gang members charged in 2020 murder 'No, I don't think that arresting these guys gonna stop the violence because they don't know what's going on. They don't understand and they don't comprehend the stuff that they are doing,' said Thomas Sheriff T.K. Waters confirmed with Action News Jax that all six suspects arrested in Breon's case were involved with the criminal 6 Block gang. Breon Allen's mother was shocked to find out Friday the number of young people involved in her son's death. 'To find out that it's six and all, our kids haven't even experienced life yet - that's what's crazy,' said Breon Allen's mother, Casheena Love. Sheriff Waters gave one piece of advice to people who are in gangs in the city. 'Get out and quit. There's a way out. If you don't get out, we're gonna come and get you,' Sheriff Waters. Sheriff T.K. Waters said the two arrests made Friday in Breon Allen's case were the final arrests. The judge also revoked her ability to drive for the rest of her life. The wrongful death lawsuit ended with a jury verdict, requiring the driver's insurance to pay out more than $30.5 million to Jack and their two children. 'Cathy Adams served her community with honor, and her family deserves every measure of accountability.' Attorney Ron Sholes added, 'After six long years, this family finally had their day in court and we're all very grateful to the jury for their part in delivering a fair and just verdict.'
