Minister directs officials to expedite work on new jail building in Bantwal
Mangaluru: Home minister G Parameshwara inspected the construction of the new building for Mangaluru District Jail in Bantwal taluk on Friday and directed officials to complete the work at the earliest.
The minister also directed officials to send a proposal so that govt can sanction Rs 87 crore to complete the work at the earliest. MLC Ivan D'Souza, who was accompanying the minister during the visit, said Rs 110 crore was required to complete the work on the new jail building, compound wall, and staff quarters.
"The home minister conducted a spot visit to understand what should be done to shift the District Jail from Mangaluru city to the new building immediately.
The minister agreed to release Rs 87 crore to complete the work on the jail building immediately and take initiatives to shift the jail from Mangaluru city. The minister also directed the officials to send a proposal immediately seeking Rs 87 crore to complete the work on the jail building and compound wall.
The work on the construction of staff quarters will be taken up in the next phase," the MLC said.
"Works pertaining to sanitary and electric fittings also will have to be taken up immediately to facilitate the shifting of the jail.

In fact, the project commenced in 2019 and the estimated cost has escalated dramatically now. Hence, the work could not be completed. The minister also sought to know why a structure was built for the new jail even before the construction of the compound wall for the land," D'Souza said.
"The home minister also visited the old jail building at Kodialbail in the city. The minister noticed two mobile signal jammers remaining out of order in the old jail.
He directed jail authorities to install the latest version of mobile jammers that function within the restricted area without inconveniencing people outside the jail premises," the MLC said.
"Meanwhile, jail authorities requested the minister to appoint more staff. The minister directed Mangaluru City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy to conduct surprise visits to the old jail to prevent illegal activities," the MLC added.
