NMC's general body rejects proposed greenfield township at Makhmalabad

Nashik Municipal Corporation
(NMC) gave its nod to wind up the proposed
greenfield township project
that was to come up at
Makhmalabad
, on the outskirts of the city. The Smart City corporation had planned the 753-acre project, and land was to be acquired from farmers. (NMSCDCL) had planned to set up a new township at Makhmalabad since Nashik city is expanding.
NMC was the planning authority for the project. It planned to acquire over 753 acres from landowners of Makhmalabad to set up infrastructure like roads, water supply, drainage, etc. The cost of the project was pegged at over Rs 300 per the draft of the township project, farmers would have got 55% of the land they gave for the integrated development of the areas, while infrastructure like roads and public amenities space would have been developed on the remaining 45% of the land.

The farmers were to get developed plots, well-equipped with modern amenities, green belt, water supply, sewage supply lines, wide roads, parking spaces, and a host of other prepared the draft plan of the proposed greenfield township project and sent it to state govt for its approval in Dec 2020. Meanwhile, a group of landowners, including some farmers, moved the Bombay high court against the proposed project in 2023. The high court also restrained NMSCDCL from carrying out any activities related to the new township project at Makhmalabad.A meeting on this project was held by the urban development department in Mumbai on April 23, 2025. During the meeting, NMC revealed its stand for the cancellation of the project. Thereupon, the urban development department instructed the civic officials to pass the proposal for cancellation of the project at the general body (GB) meeting and send the GB's resolution to state the NMC's GB approved the proposal for the cancellation of the greenfield project.
