Union Minister Manohar Lal hails power sector gains as PM Modi launches green energy projects in Kutch

Bhuj (Gujarat) [India], May 26 (ANI): Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal on Monday said India has made unprecedented progress in the power sector over the last decade, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over Rs 50,000 crore in Gujarat's Bhuj. 'We have reached new heights in the field of electricity and power, and made unprecedented progress. There was a time when power cuts were common, but today, despite the huge power consumption, electricity is available for a good 22-24 hours even in villages,' he said while addressing the gathering. Highlighting the achievements under the current government, the Union Minister noted that India's electricity generation capacity has almost doubled in the past ten years. 'In 10 years, our electricity production has nearly doubled and reached 472 GW,' he said. Looking ahead, he outlined the government's commitment to scaling up renewable energy output. 'We will speed up our electricity production even more with the use of non-fossil, i.e. renewable energy sources. By 2030, 500 GW of electricity will be produced via renewable sources,' he added. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi said that Kutch was fast becoming the world's largest centre for green energy. He also laid the foundation for a green hydrogen factory in the region. 'Green hydrogen is a new fuel type, and in the near future, cars and buses will run on it. Today, the foundation stone for a green hydrogen factory has been laid -- and the technology behind it is Made in India,' PM Modi said while addressing the gathering here. He added that the projects launched would help make India a blue economy and boost port-led development. 'Today, Kutch is the centre of tourism and business. Kutch's role will be much bigger in the future. The foundation stone has been laid for the development projects worth over Rs 50,000 crore. There was a time when the whole of Gujarat would not see such a huge project announcement, and now a district will benefit from such a huge development work. This project will help make India a blue economy of the world and a centre of green energy. I congratulate all of you,' PM Modi said. The Prime Minister further stated the government's resolve with the launch of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana earlier, stating that every citizen must have access to electricity and that the electricity bill must be zero. 'It is our government's resolve that every citizen should have access to electricity, and their electricity bill should be zero. That is why we launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Many people in Gujarat are already benefiting from this scheme. One common factor among many developed nations is that their seas have empowered their growth. Our Port-led Development Vision is inspired by the ancient Indian legacy of thriving ports and maritime history,' PM Modi said. 'My relationship with Kutch is quite old. You also give me so much love that I can't stop myself from coming to Kachchh. When I was not in politics, I used to come here often. I got the chance to roam every corner living here has become easy, but the situation was different in the earlier days. When the water of Narmada reached Kutch for the first time, that day was no less than Diwali for Kutch, and it was an unprecedented celebration... Fortunately, you all gave me a chance to contribute to this cause,' he added. (ANI)

Puducherry power minister seeks extension of 105 MW additional power allocation till September

PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry Power Minister Namassivayam has sought extension of additional allocation of power of 105 MW till September to meet Puducherry's peak summer requirement. Speaking at the Conference of Southern States and Union Territories held in Bengaluru, chaired by the Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, he thanked the centre for allocating an additional 105 MW of power from March 29 to May 31, 2025, which he said has helped the UT manage peak summer demand. However, with no significant power generation within Puducherry itself, he requested the Union Ministry of Power to continue this additional allocation until September 2025 to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. The minister also pointed out that the current load transfer capacity from the Southern Grid to Puducherry stands at 540 MW. To meet anticipated future demand, Namassivayam urged the centre to favourably consider a General Network Access (GNA) request for an additional 80 MW. Further emphasising power reliability, he called on NLC India Ltd to expedite the installation of an interconnecting transformer (ICT) at Neyveli. This project is critical to addressing N-1 contingency requirements and ensuring consistent power availability for the UT. Looking ahead, the UT of Puducherry has proposed procurement of 50 MW from NTPC Telangana, 100 MW from NLC and 50 MW from Kudankulam Units III and IV to accommodate growing demand.

Work on ideal power mix, add nuclear capacity: Manohar Lal to States

Power minister Manohar Lal on Friday said resource adequacy and necessary power generation capacity tie-ups should be ensured by states. States should, while meeting their resource adequacy plan , also work on having an adequate power generation mix, including addition of nuclear generation capacity, Lal said while addressing the regional power conference with southern states. Lal said states should work towards resolving the intra-state transmission sector challenges, including 'right of way' issues. He emphasized the need to adopt guidelines issued by the central government in this regard. States should leverage the scheme announced in Union Budget 2025-26 including the scheme of ₹1.5 lakh crore interest-free loan to states for 50-year for infrastructure development. Lal urged states to submit proposals for third phase of the Green Energy Corridor and asked to promote renewable energy coupled with storage solutions so as to have energy reliability and to collectively meet India's international climate commitments under the UNFCCC. Power secretary Pankaj Agarwal, who also addressed the conference, highlighted that it is crucial to ensure necessary power generation capacity tie-ups as per the resource adequacy plan for up to FY35 to meet future power demand. He added that It is imperative to make necessary arrangements for development of inter-state and intra-state transmission capacities through various financing models available including tariff-based competitive bidding , regulated tariff mechanism, budgetary support or monetization of existing assets. States should make all efforts for securing the power sector infrastructure, including the transmission grid and distribution systems, against cyber security concerns and should implement necessary cyber security protocols for the same, he added. In addition, states should work towards ensuring financial viability of distribution utilities, he said.

Centre asks states to tie up for power procurement, develop transmission infra to meet rising demand

New Delhi: Union minister for power Manohar Lal on Friday stressed the need for resource adequacy and tie-ups for power procurement to meet increasing demand. Addressing the regional conference for the South, he said that states, while meeting their resource adequacy plan should also work on having an adequate power generation mix including addition of nuclear generation capacity, said the ministry. The statement gains significance as power purchase agreements for over 40GW of renewable power projects are unsigned. He also asked urged to accelerate the development of inter-state transmission networks, including Right of Way (RoW) issues. Right of way refers to the legal right for passage over of use of the land owned by some other individual or entity. He asked states for adoption of guidelines issued by the Union government in this regard. The minister noted that that states should promote renewable energy coupled with storage solutions so as to have energy reliability and to collectively meet India's international climate commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Addressing the conference, Pankaj Agarwal, secretary, Union ministry of power, reiterated the need to meet future power demand by ensuring necessary power generation capacity tie-ups as per the resource adequacy plan for up to FY2035. He said that it is also imperative to make necessary arrangements for development of inter-state and intra-state transmission capacities through various financing models available including Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB), Regulated Tariff Mechanism (RTM), budgetary support or monetization of existing assets. The secretary also said that states should make all efforts for securing the power sector infrastructure, including the transmission grid and distribution systems, against cyber security concerns and should implement necessary cyber security protocols for the same, he added. Growth in the transmission network is also important to integrate the growing renewable energy capacity in the country, more so when the government aims to achieve 500GW of non-fossil capacity in the country by 2030. An investment of ₹ 10 trillion would be required in the power transmission space by 2030 as the government aims to add battery storage capacity along with expanding transmission network. According to the National Electricity Plan for transmission released by the CEA in October last year, a cumulative investment of ₹ 9.15 trillion would be required in the transmission sector to achieve 500GW clean energy capacity and add the required storage capacity to ensure steady power supply. Data from CEA, showed that about 8,830 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines were added in FY25 across the country, 37.8% lower than 14,203 ckm in the previous fiscal.
