Golden Knights GM Sends Clear Message on Jack Eichel Contract
The Vegas Golden Knights fell short of another Stanley Cup run, being eliminated in the second round by the Edmonton Oilers. Despite Vegas holding home-ice advantage, the Oilers made quick work of them, winning the series in six games. Now entering the offseason, the Golden Knights have some work to do. But one of the more important pieces of business is the contract status of star Jack Eichel. Advertisement Eichel will be entering the final year of his deal and can enter free agency next year. However, Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon is hoping not to allow that to happen. 'The guy is a tremendous player," McCrimmon said. "He's one of the top guys in the NHL. He's got great character and great leadership. You see night in and night out what he does for our team. So that will be a really important piece of business for us. I sure hope to keep Jack in our organization. Jack loves it here. I hope we can find common ground and keep him a Golden Knight.' Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel (9) celebrates after scoring an empty net goal against the Detroit Red Wings during the third period at T-Mobile Arena. Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images Eichel is coming off a great season for Vegas, scoring 28 goals and 66 assists. The star is one of the main reasons why the Golden Knights grabbed the Pacific Division title, and the team will do what it can to keep him around long-term. Advertisement 'We'll work on those players first, make some decisions there, or have a discussion with them and with agents,' McCrimmon said. 'We're going to do everything we can to improve our team in the next six or seven weeks.' If the Golden Knights can agree on a new deal with Eichel, it would keep this core together. Eichel seems to enjoy playing in Vegas, but at the end of the day, money tends to talk in these situations. Sam Bennett Speaks Out on Max Domi's Hit on Aleksander Barkov
The Toronto Maple Leafs held a 2–0 lead in their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series against the Florida Panthers. However, after Sunday night's game, the series is now tied at two games apiece. Florida dictated the pace and completely outmatched Toronto, outshooting the Leafs 37–23. The Panthers got a goal from Carter Verhaeghe in the first period and another from Sam Bennett midway through the third to win 2-0. Advertisement Before the final horn sounded, tensions boiled over when Maple Leafs forward Max Domi delivered a dirty hit on Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov. With the puck pinned against the boards in Florida's zone and Barkov facing the wall, Domi skated in from the slot and leveled him from behind. The hit ignited a full-on brawl, with Brad Marchand, Aaron Ekblad, and Bobby McMann all receiving 10-minute misconducts. Domi, himself, received a 5-minute major for boarding. Following the game, Bennett spoke to the media and was asked about the hit, saying he expects more of that in this physical series. Advertisement "Obviously, he was trying to take a run at Barky at the end there," Bennett said. "The boys did a good job jumping in there and sticking up for Barky. I mean, it's been a physical series, so I expect more of that." Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov (16) against the Toronto Maple Klement Neitzel These two teams have gotten to know each other real well over the past few seasons, so it's no surprise to see this level of physicality. After all, it's playoff hockey. In addition to being division rivals, this marks the second playoff series between the Panthers and Maple Leafs in the last three years. Florida won their 2023 second-round matchup in five games. Game 5 of this year's series is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. NHL Announces Big Update to Maple Leafs-Panthers Playoff Series
The second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs is about to begin, and there are plenty of strong matchups upcoming. One of the more intriguing ones comes from the Eastern Conference, where the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers are set to square off. The NHL has announced a massive update to this series just days before it starts. The league has announced that Game 1 will start on Monday, May 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Advertisement Toronto will have home-ice advantage in this series, potentially giving them a slight edge in the matchup. But the Maple Leafs did struggle with the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the playoffs, offering some concern for how they will fare against Florida. Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk (19) takes up a position in front of Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov (35).Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Florida is the reigning Stanley Cup champion, so they will be looking to keep the repeat chances alive. The Panthers have turned themselves into a true juggernaut on the ice, and the Maple Leafs could be in some trouble. One issue for the Maple Leafs in recent years has been the inability to get over expectations placed on them. Toronto has continuously fallen short in the playoffs, despite having an extremely talented team to work with. Advertisement If the Maple Leafs can take down the Panthers, it could silence many doubters once and for all. Toronto was the best team in the Eastern Conference this season and will be looking to prove itself in this series. This is the second time that these two organizations will play each other in the postseason, with the Panthers winning in five games in the 2023 second round. Florida also took three of four games in the regular season from Toronto. Related: Wild Maple Leafs-Panthers Playoff Prediction Turns Heads
