(WJET/WFXP)– Maple season in northwest Pennsylvania is underway and Asbury Woods is joining in on the sweet festivities with their annual Maple Festival. Asbury Woods announced Tuesday morning that Maple Festival will make its return on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 filled with tours, demonstrations, family fun and maple products of all kinds. NWPA's Maple Taste and Tour makes its sweet return Each year hundreds of people make their way to the Asbury Woods Nature Center to enjoy maple tours, different kinds of interactive stations and the famous sugar shack where festivalgoers can get an up-close view of how pure maple syrup is made. Each year Asbury Woods taps their sugar maple trees, which are only found in this region of the world, then collects and boils sap into pure maple syrup. Crumbl Cookies set to arrive with Erie location this year 'Our Maple Festival gives the public an opportunity to see the maple syrup process first-hand. By running our sugar shack when the sap is flowing, people get to see and smell the magic of maple. We've included many interactive stations located inside our Nature Center so people can visit the stations they want at their own pace, along with lectures, and kids' activities,' said Sarah Bennett, interim executive director of Asbury Woods. Festivities kick off on both days at 10 a.m. and wrap up at 3 p.m. with tickets costing $6 per person with kids under the age of 3 free. Bowlers strike up support to build county's first hospice house, palliative care clinic

A fundraiser was held Sunday for a building that would be the first of its kind in Erie County. Julia Hospice and Palliative Care held Julia's Bowl for Hope in an effort to raise money for Erie County's first-ever hospice house and palliative care clinic they are calling Julia House. North East residents get a lesson in stained glass art The organization is roughly $500,000 short of the funds they need to start the project. Once funds are raised, the building is expected to take about a year to construct and staff. NWPA's Maple Taste and Tour makes its sweet return 'The facility will be in McKean which is about as centrally located as you can get in the county, and the need is the fact that we are an aging population, and Erie County has the lowest hospice utilization rate in the state as per 2022 medicare statistics, so yes, there is a great need,' said Karen Adams, a member of Julia hospice and palliative care's board of advisors. The organization will also hold a cash bingo on April 27 to continue raising funds for the Julia house. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. North East residents get a lesson in stained glass art

Stained glass is a popular form of art in churches and other old buildings and some people got a chance to make their own. The Clear Cut Stained Glass Studio held a four-hour stained glass workshop at the North East Arts Council on Vine Street. SeaWolves unofficially kick off baseball season with Shamrock Shindig Students crafted their own stained glass artwork every step of the way from cutting and grinding pieces of glass to combining those pieces into a final product. One of the class instructors said it can be a complicated process, but it's all worth it for the final outcome. NWPA's Maple Taste and Tour makes its sweet return 'Stained glass is beautiful, every time we go to another city, I'm looking for a cathedral to go see the stained glass. Seeing it go from on the table, dark, messy, dirty to cleaning it and putting it in the light, there's something awe-inspiring,' said Ken Falkenhagen, Clearcut Stained Glass Owner & Instructor. NWPA's Maple Taste and Tour makes its sweet return

Maple syrup season is officially here with the 22nd annual Maple Taste and Tour kicking off this weekend. Over 20 local farms are showcasing this season's maple syrup harvest, putting customers on a tour across six different counties. You can't make maple syrup everywhere in the world, but in northwest pennsylvania, maple syrup tapping is a yearly event people look forward to. And at last maple syrup season is here, with over 20 farms across 6 counties celebrating the 22nd annual Maple Taste and Tour this weekend. 'Maple syrup is such a natural thing, we've been making for about 25 years now. It's been something my youngest son and I started on a whim, and we've been making it ever since,' Bill Phillips, owner of Fort Leboeuf maple. Visitors came to Fort Leboeuf Maple this weekend to tour the maple syrup-making process, eat pancakes and sausage, and of course, taste-test the maple syrup. But making maple syrup isn't easy, and farmers go through a long process to perfect the sugary concoction. 'We run it through a reverse osmosis machine, boil sap, draw off syrup, we bring it out here into this room and we finish it, run it through a filter press and run it into our jugs,' Phillips said. Now making maple syrup can be a long and complicated process. What you're seeing right here is the caramelization process, where they're separating that sap from the water, and eventually, you get that sweet goodness that's known as maple syrup. 'Syrup does not wait for nobody. When the season's here, it's here, it's time to go. It's kind of been late this year, which is kind of a blessing in disguise.' 'We can prepare all year for this, and you don't know when the weather is actually going to break,' said Andrew Furry, owner of Furry's Family Farm. Furry Family Farms made its debut at the Maple Taste and Tour this year as a small family-run operation with under 500 maple taps. And if you haven't had a chance to get your local maple syrup yet, it's not too late, With the season getting a late start this year, there's still sap to be tapped.
