East Hartford police investigating dog deaths

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Less than a week apart, two dogs were found dead in East Hartford. According to East Hartford Police, a dog that appeared to be a young Pitbull between four-to-10 weeks old was found dead in a garbage bag in a wooded area near Forbes and Cottage Street on Sunday morning. 2 dogs rescued from house fire on Alden Avenue in New Haven Officers said the dog had what appeared to be a gunshot wound in its side, but it has not been confirmed yet. This is one of two recent incidents where East Hartford Animal Control said dogs were thrown away as if they were trash. On March 18th, a golden retriever was found dead in a garbage can behind the abandoned Stop & Shop on Silver Lane. The two locations are about three minutes apart, but police reported that there is no evidence that the two incidents are connected. These deadly incidents are still under investigation. Officer Marc Caruso, the Public Information Officer for the East Hartford Police Department told News 8 that a necropsy will be done on the golden retriever to determine the cause of death. He described these deadly incidents as horrifying. 'Any time something like this happens we all know our animals are parts of our family and they are innocent and defenseless animals so when you see this type of pain or behavior inflicted on an animal it's sad for everyone involved, especially pet owners,' said Caruso. While animal cruelty is a crime, Zilla Cannamela with Desmond's Army Animal Law Advocates said if an animal passes away there are proper steps to take including a burial in your backyard or you can reach out to your local dog pound to have your pet cremated. East Hartford officials alert residents as ICE officials spotted entering home

Immigration officials were at a home in East Hartford over the weekend amidst a mass deportation plan being carried out around the nation. Authorities with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were seen entering a home Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the Town of East Hartford. Officer Marc Caruso of the East Hartford Police Department said ICE officials notified police they would be in town, though they did not request any assistance. Caruso said he was not aware if anyone was taken into custody and deferred further comment to ICE. 'We understand there has been a lot of concern, questions, and alerts circulating in our community recently,' town officials wrote on Facebook. 'It's more important than ever to stay informed.' The post also encouraged individuals to know their rights if they are approached by ICE officials. 'If ICE approaches you or your home, you have the right to remain silent and refuse to sign anything without speaking to a lawyer,' town officials wrote. 'ICE cannot enter your home without a valid warrant signed by a judge. Always ask to see it.' 'Everyone, regardless of their status, has rights under the Constitution,' the post stated. ICE's presence comes amidst a mass deportation plan announced by President Donald J. Trump being carried out across the country. A spokesperson for ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
