Nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks investigated over potential transmission issue, NHTSA says
Federal safety regulators are investigating a potential issue affecting nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks after receiving more than 100 consumer complaints about transmission shifting to a lower gear without warning. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Monday that regulators have received 138 complaints about F-150 vehicles in model years 2015-2017 regarding an unrequested transmission downshift that allegedly causes the vehicle to decelerate rapidly. Some of the complaints also allege the spontaneous downshift causes their rear wheels to temporarily lock, seize or skid increasing the risk for crash and injury, the NHTSA reported. The probe is specific to 2015-2017 F-150 vehicles with 6-speed transmission, according to Ford Motor Company spokesperson Maria Buczkowski, who told USA TODAY the auto manufacturer is "working with the agency to support its investigation." The NHTSA said a preliminary evaluation is currently underway into the issue that will determine whether the "scope and severity" of the safety issues warrant an official recall. The investigation comes as the company recalled nearly 50,000 vehicles Ford and Lincoln vehicles due to a possible backup camera that was improperly repaired under a previous recall. The backup camera video output may fail in 2020-2023 Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators as well as 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsairs, according to the NHTSA. Ford also issued two recalls after incorrect fixes to previous recalls. Nearly 13,000 vehicles from the 2021 to 2024 Bronco Sport and 2022 to 2023 Maverick may have body and power train control modules that may possibly fail to detect a change in the 12-volt battery state of charge. More than 2,250 are recalled due to incorrectly repaired 2021-2022 Edge vehicles that may cause the rearview camera to display a blank or distorted image while in reverse, according to the NHTSA. Dealers must update the software without charge and mail notification letters by April 24. Read more about these official recalls here. Ford, Toyota recall more than 130,000 vehicles made in Kentucky. Here's what we know
Ford Motor Co. and Toyota are recalling thousands of vehicles made at three different facilities in Kentucky. The two Ford recalls apply to some models of the Expedition, Super Duty trucks and the Escape. Additionally, Lincoln, Ford's luxury vehicle line, saw recalls issued for certain models of the Corsair. Additionally, Toyota is recalling some models of its Camry vehicles, which are produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. Recalls have been a pain point for Ford, with 2023 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data indicating Ford issued the most recalls, making up 16% of all recalls, USA TODAY previously reported. According to 2023 NHTSA data, Toyota was not an automaker in the top 10 of recalls based on the number of vehicles potentially affected. Over the past two years in an effort to address recalls, Ford has placed an emphasis on quality control at its assembly plants, including the iconic Kentucky Truck Plant, which is home to the Super Duty, and the Louisville Assembly Plant. "We're constantly working to improve vehicle quality and deliver the best experience for our customers. Voluntary recalls are one way we protect customers from known safety problems," Maria Buczkowski, a spokesperson for Ford, said in a statement to USA TODAY in December. With Ford gearing up for a new vehicle launch out of Louisville later this year and Toyota moving into its first year of the Camry being exclusively hybrid, here's what we know about the newest recalls hitting vehicles manufactured in Kentucky: Number of vehicles potentially affected: 91,580 In a recall published Jan. 31, Ford noted rearview camera issues. The recall stated the rearview camera image may not display, which could lead to reducing the driver's view of what is behind them and potentially increase the risk of a crash. Driver's may experience the rearview camera displaying a blank or distorted image. Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injury related to this condition, according to a filing with the NHTSA. The vehicles being recalled are certain models of the 2021 Expedition, 2021-2022 Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600, and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles. Both the Expedition and the Super Duty vehicles are made at the Kentucky Truck Plant while the Lincoln Corsair is made across town at the Louisville Assembly Plant. The remedy for the recall is "currently under development" but interim letters alerting drivers of the recall were mailed Feb. 27. Vehicle owners should expect a second letter to be mailed to them once a final remedy is established. Number of vehicles potentially affected: 298 These vehicles, both produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant, may experience issues with the instrument panel display failing. The recall notice, published Jan. 31 stated the instrument panel fails to show "critical safety information," including the speedometer and warning lights, which can potentially increase the risk of crashing. This recall impacts certain 2025 Escape and Corsair vehicles as well as the 2025 Ford Bronco Sport, which is made in Mexico. The remedy for this recall is for dealers to replace the instrument panel free of charge. Letters were mailed to vehicle owners alerting them of the recall and remedy Feb. 17. Number of vehicles potentially affected: 40,922 The recall, published Feb. 6, involves second-row seatbelts in vehicles. The damaged second-row seatbelts may not adequately restrain a passenger, which can increase the risk of injury in a crash. This recall includes the Kentucky made 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid as well as a handful of other Toyota vehicles not produced in Kentucky, including certain Lexus NX250, NX350, NX350 Hybrid, 2024-2025 Lexus RX350, RX350 Hybrid, and RX500 Hybrid vehicles. The remedy for the recall is for dealers to inspect the seatbelts and if faulty, replace free of charge. Letters are expected to be mailed to vehicle owners on March 24. Vehicle owners impacted by the recent Ford and Toyota recalls should expect to receive communications from the automakers directing next steps. If owners need extra support navigating the recall process, they can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or toll-free at 1-800-424-9153, or visit to Contact business reporter Olivia Evans at oevans@ or on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter at @oliviamevans_.
