Syracuse's north side residents air their frustrations the fire-damaged building on Maria Regina campus

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — The big north side fire is out, but there are still simmering questions about the safety and future of the Maria Regina College campus. The Washington Square Neighborhood Association had a meeting for residents to air out their concerns and frustrations about losing the Motherhouse. 'The government can do a better job holding these private owners accountable,' Bonnke Sekarore said. Several city officials, from Chief of Fire Michael Monds to Deputy Commissioner in the Department of Water Robert Brandt to Councilor Marty Nave, answered questions throughout the evening. Katherine Scott, a woman who has lived on the north side for over 70 years, said she wanted to find out more about what will happen to the Maria Regina campus, a place she has always considered an iconic symbol of the community. 'I think, if you talk to pretty much anybody on the north side, they had been on there, or somebody in their family had participated in services there…so it really has a wonderful, wonderful history,' Scott said. Scott said she hopes officials will invoke stronger safety protocols for the remaining buildings on campus. '…because I care deeply about the Franciscan campus and also want to make sure that there can be redevelopment done,' she said. The Motherhouse will be demolished, but the city said the property owner's timeline for doing so is still being determined. Chief Monds added that the fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Syracuse firefighters spend several hours battling blaze at historic landmark

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A busy Friday night turned into a busy morning for Syracuse firefighters, after a massive blaze erupted at the historic Maria Regina College campus on the city's North Side. 'It was a massive fire. One of the biggest fires we've had in our city in decades,' said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds. More than 65 firefighters were needed after a four-alarm fire was called around 6:30 p.m. 'The first firefighters on scene, they took hose lines and they stretched them to the fourth floor. That's where the fire was and they were attempting to extinguish the fire, the fire just had too much of an advance head start on us,' said Chief Monds. As a result, 11 people were displaced from their homes. 'Before that fire was totally extinguished, we got reports of a fire up here on Court Street. A bunch of crews from that fire responded to get an analysis of what was going on here and when they showed up, there was fire coming through the roof,' said Chief Monds. Crews were finally able to put out the Court Street fire around 5 a.m. on Saturday. However, as of Saturday afternoon, dozens of firefighters were still on scene, working to extinguish hot spots. The department says a firefighter who responded to both fires was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Syracuse Police are also looking into reports made by neighbors who say they saw people running from the building when the fire started. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
