Patna: CPI(M) general secretary Mariam Alexander Baby on Monday said the six-party
Grand Alliance
(GA) of the
INDIA bloc
is firmly on course to defeat the
NDA
in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, scheduled for Oct-Nov, and unseat the Nitish Kumar-led govt.
"As a sign of its unity, the GA partners recently held a convention of their party functionaries and also discussed their internal matters and popular issues facing the people. They have decided to defeat the BJP and dislodge the NDA govt," Baby said, adding that the question of a chief ministerial face for the GA was "not a big problem". He was addressing reporters at the party's state headquarters here.
This was Baby's first visit to Bihar since becoming the CPI(M) general secretary at the party's 24th congress, held in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, early last month. "The political resolution adopted at the congress with one voice has given a call to defeat the RSS-controlled BJP and its allies by forging the broadest possible unity of Left, democratic and secular forces in the country and in each state," he said.
He described the Bihar assembly elections as the first major test of this resolution, adding, "The CPM welcomes the fact that the Bihar GA has already begun serious preparations unitedly to achieve it."

Baby alleged that the NDA's prospects in Bihar were bleak, blaming CM Nitish Kumar for entering into an "opportunistic alliance" with the BJP, which he accused of committing "the biggest atrocity in the form of communal violence".
While welcoming the Centre's announcement on a caste-based and socio-economic survey, he questioned its implementation. "The big question is when and how will it be held?" he said.
State secretary Lalan Choudhary said the party would implement the resolutions of the Madurai meet in full with particular emphasis on strengthening and expanding the Bihar unit.
