The Best Spicule Skin Care Products Are Like Microneedling in a Bottle

I'm one of those people who loves skin care but is afraid of in-0ffice treatments like Botox and microneedling. Lucky for me, the latest skin care trend gaining traction stateside involves little discomfort and only a spot on your vanity. Enter spicules, the latest K-beauty import taking over vanities everywhere Originating in Korea, 'topical spicule products contain microscopic needle-like structures that gently penetrate the upper layers of the skin to create a micro-stimulating effect,' explains dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD. Fellow dermatologist Nicole Salame, MD, FAAD notes that these needle-like structures can be derived from 'marine sponges, like Haliclona spp, which contain both calcium and silica' or synthesized from bioactive ingredients. When applied to the skin, they can encourage natural exfoliation, cell turnover, and better absorption of active ingredients, helping to do everything from smooth fine lines to decrease hyperpigmentation. Spicule-infused formulas are relatively painless to apply, Garshick mentions that you can expect 'a noticeable tingling or prickling sensation that can last several hours.' As such, it's best to apply them at night. She also suggests avoiding strong actives like AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, or retinol immediately after, as these can cause irritation while the skin is more sensitive. Instead, she recommends following up with gentle moisturizers and hydrating serums that can support skin recovery, as well as sunscreen in the morning. 'As with any exfoliating or skin-renewing product, your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure.' Ahead, I tapped both experts and pored over customer reviews to find the best spicules skin care products currently on the market. Scroll down to shop them, plus uncover more expert-backed tips on how to incorporate spicules into your routine. VT Cosmetics is arguably responsible for putting spicules skin care on the map. Its popular Reedle Shot Essence 1000 is the most potent strength offered, though if you wish to ease your way into the trend, the formula comes in a few lower dosages. Also within the serum is Centella Asiatica, an Eastern herb traditionally used for healing wounds, eczema, and psoriasis. Per reviewers, the creamy formula is lightweight and quickly absorbs into the skin. An Amazon reviewer says: 'This is very active but really helped my redness.' If you can handle more potent treatments and/or are already comfortable with microneedling, this high-intensity spicule serum is the way to go. It contains a whopping 30,000 spicules that work to smooth out rough textures and minimize the appearance of pores. Additionally, it contains niacinamide and collagen to help plump and add a glow. According to reviewers, it quickly dissolves into the skin and dries down slightly tacky—though it'll make your complexion feel facial-soft if you follow it up with an enriching moisturizer. An Amazon reviewer says: 'I used this product and within seconds I could see my face tighten before my eyes! It was incredible, within three days I looked back to my teenage self! I love the little tingle it gives you—it's almost addictive.' This Dr. Garshick-approved sheet mask uses spicules to enhance the results of its other powerhouse ingredients, including French collagen, elastin, nourishing hyaluronic acid, and four types of complex peptides. 'It delivers visible plumping and firming after just one use,' she says. What's more, it promises to lift and tone for a more contoured look. To offset the slightly tingling sensation, it also creates an instant cooling effect on the skin. This option from Aprilskin was specifically formulated for sensitive skin types, featuring a blend of tranexamic acid and niacinamide to reduce redness and flare-ups. Due to its non-irritating formula, it's also suitable for daily use. An Amazon reviewer says: 'I believe I see my redness fading already. The tingle for me was so mild and only lasted about 30 seconds, and I have fairly sensitive skin.' For a deep clean, look no further than this spicule-infused mask from Pestlo. 'As a form of mechanical exfoliant, it can aid in smoothing texture and improving skin appearance,' says Dr. Salame. On top of working to clear out pores, it uses green tea extracts to reduce irritation, mugwort to promote skin healing, and pine bark extract to rebuild the skin barrier. An Amazon reviewer says: 'Very satisfying! My skin is glowing flawlessly, my pores are visibly smaller, and my skin is a lot smoother.' You may know PDRN by its street name: salmon sperm. Though it can sound off-putting, the salmon sperm-derived ingredient has been shown to noticeably boost hydration, collagen production, and reduce inflammation. This formula from viral brand Medicube combines salmon sperm with spicules to optimize these benefits. Backed by over 200 five-star reviews, it's praised by shoppers for helping to instantly brighten and smooth fine lines. If you've been eager to achieve glass skin, start with this. An Amazon reviewer says: 'My new favorite product. I could see the difference in my skin the next day. My complexion looked smoother, softer, and healthier. I see more results with this product at under $30 than I do with products that cost twice as much.' I know what you're thinking: If spicule skin care exists, do I still need to microneedle? While spicules offer a gentler approach that doesn't puncture the skin, Dr. Salame explains that the depth of penetration with spicules is roughly 0.2 to 0.5 mm, whereas microneedling ranges anywhere between 0.5 to 2.5 mm. If your skin can handle it and you want faster results, in-office microneedling may be your preferred option. 'Microneedling involves a controlled environment with professional tools and treatments,' says Dr. Garshick, adding that it's best to avoid at-home tools like dermarollers to avoid potentially damaging your skin. Every spicule product is different, so it's important to follow the instructions to a tee. As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Garshick advises applying on 'clean, dry skin, usually in the evening when your skin can rest and regenerate overnight.' She also recommends following up with soothing, hydrating formulas, due to the micro-channels spicules create on the skin. Most spicule products are meant to be used once or twice a week to allow your skin to fully recover between applications, says Dr. Garshick. You'll also want to avoid aggressively massaging spicules into your complexion, warns Dr. Salame, as this may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring. Dr. Garshick says spicule products can be beneficial for many skin types but may not be suitable for those with highly sensitive skin, as 'the stimulating sensation could trigger more irritation.' Dr. Salame adds that patients with acne or risk of hyperpigmentation should also proceed with caution. Vogue's Guide to the Different Types of Sunscreen You Need This Summer

Ask any dermatologist what the best sunscreen is and they'll most likely tell you this: the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use everyday. But how does one choose that perfect sunscreen that will make you remember this very important step in your routine? To figure that out, you'll have to understand what all of your options are. Below, the experts break down every type of sunscreen to help you make wise skin health (and shopping) decisions. Types of Sunscreen There are two types of sunscreens you can choose from: mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. The difference between the two can be broken down as follows: Mineral Sunscreens Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, block the sun's harmful UV rays from penetrating the skin. As Marisa Garshick, MD, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, explains it, mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to scatter and reflect the UV rays when it bounces off the skin to protect it from damage. There are many pros of mineral sunscreen, but they are most known to be less irritating and great for sensitive skin. Though they may leave behind a white cast, Dr. Garshick says that newer formulations have been developed to minimize that. Options like the U Beauty's Multimodal Sheer Mineral Sunscreen or Shiseido's Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion Mineral SPF 60+ provide nourishing skincare benefits while also blending quite nicely into the skin. Chemical Sunscreens According to Hadley King, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's UV rays and create a chemical reaction to turn the UV rays into heat that will be released from the skin. They're usually made of chemical ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, and homosalate, and Dr. Garshick says these formulations are generally easier to rub in and won't leave a white cast. But because they are made of various chemical filters, she does warn that some people may experience some irritation or sensitivity to these types of formulas. But a lot of formulations are made with sensitive skin in mind, such as the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 or the Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+. If you happen to like the feel of these chemical sunscreens more, you can easily opt for these gentle options over a mineral one. Lotions, Sprays, Sticks, and More Sunscreens also come in many forms. You can find a mineral and chemical sunscreen in a lotion, stick (the E.l.f. Cosmetics Suntouchable Invisi-Stick SPF 50 makes reapplying so easy while on the go), spray, and even serum format (cult-classic Australian sunscreen brand Ultra Violette is finally available in the U.S. and the Future Screen SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen Serum is a current fave among many). Mineral sunscreens also come in powder form like the classic Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50. When it comes to choosing between these types of sunscreen, Dr. King says that you should pick the one most appropriate for your lifestyle. What does SPF mean? We're always told to look for sunscreen with SPF, but what does that actually mean? SPF stands for sun protection factor and as Dr. King explains it, it measures how much a sunscreen will shield your skin from ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which can cause sunburn.

The experts consulted for this story do not necessarily endorse the products ahead unless otherwise noted. Hypochlorous acid's inflammation-calming power has captured the hearts of HuffPosters and reviewers, and its science backs the results up. The antimicrobial ingredient is naturally found in our body's white blood cells, according to dermatologists, and is gentle enough for daily use on sensitive skin. Prequel's hypochlorous acid spray was previously recommended by dermatologist Marisa Garshick to hydrate and soothe eczema-prone skin. Target Besides helping heal irritation and acne, reduce redness and ease itchiness, hypochlorous acid can help strengthen the skin barrier, especially during dry weather. It's so gentle yet effective that you can use it to cleanse your eyelids, as another dermatologist told HuffPost. The versatile Prequel solution has also been accepted by the National Rosacea Society for use on rosacea. Garshick recommended applying hypochlorous acid after cleansing and before other skincare products, or mid-day on top of makeup. You can also use the ingredient for a quick spray-on cleanse after a workout, she added. Reviewers concur: 'It makes my skin feel fresh and less icky,' one wrote, with another saying, 'My sensitive skin loves it. It alleviates my skin when it feels off.' Prequel's spray bottle makes the solution especially easy to apply, according to reviewers. 'I also love the spray nozzle — makes a great mist,' one reviewer said. It does the job very well.' — Kaerys 'I just purchased this for the 3rd time. I love the versatility of hypochlorous acid! I use this for skin irritation, minor injuries, after exercise (and before putting on my climbing shoes, on my feet!), on my underarms...I seriously cannot go without this. I will continue to purchase this as a staple in my skin/health care routine.' — Amanda F.

This Rosemary Oil Gave Reviewers 'Significantly Fuller Hair' And It's Currently On Sale

Hair thinning with age is way more common than you probably think, but if any additional shedding and breakage worries you, there may be a remedy. According to several reviewers, this TikTok-viral hair oil with rosemary has helped some users get 'significantly fuller hair' through consistent use, also resulting in shinier, stronger and lengthier strands. Even better, you can nab a single bottle or a two-pack today for 15% off when you clip the on-page coupon! Keyoma's batana oil contains fatty acids, contributing to supremely hydrated, soft and shiny hair. Alongside rosemary oil, this vial is packed with vitamins, omega-3s and antioxidants, all of which are said to tame frizz, replenish dry strands and add some silky smoothness to your texture. Just apply two to three drops on any part of your scalp you'd like to treat, gently massage and then wait 30 minutes before rinsing. The brand recommends using it three to four times a week and for at least 30 days (basically, a bottle's worth) to see results. Though this seems like a miracle oil, please keep in mind: like all haircare products, your mileage may vary. Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist with MDCS Dermatology in New York City, previously told HuffPost that rosemary oil not only conditions and strengthens hair, but also helps reduce damage and breakage, thereby contributing to a stronger hair appearance. 'Research has also indicated that rosemary oil can potentially accelerate hair growth by improving blood circulation in the scalp, which stimulates hair follicles,' Garshick added. Keyword: potentially. More studies are needed for this to show this as a foolproof way to regrowth, however. Regardless, though, many reviewers swear by the results they're seeing with this hair growth serum. 'I have used other hair growth products before and I often have not seen results for months,' says a reviewer named Kelly, 'but I can already see a difference in the length and thickness and shine of my hair.' Several folks also say this oil smells excellent and has a minty scent to it. 'I have used other hair growth products before and I often have not seen results for months but I can already see a difference in the length and thickness and shine of my hair. Being a bleach blonde I struggle with growth and try to treat my hair with the best products to keep it as healthy as possible (also non toxic and natural). I LOVE Keyoma, the oil smells good and feels great on your hair/scalp. I would highly recommend.' — Kelly McCarthy 'I rarely review products, but as a cosmetologist with over 30 years of experience, I have experience with a ton of hair products, and keyoma's Batana Oil and Rosemary Hair Growth Serum is really something special. I first heard about it from a friend, and in my upper 50′s, I was looking for a natural solution to strengthen thinning hair and detox my scalp. After giving it a try, I can confidently say—this stuff works! My hair feels thicker, looks shinier, and I've noticed far less shedding. The natural ingredients, especially the Batana oil, seem to nourish my hair from the roots, and my scalp feels healthier and more balanced. I love that this is truly a natural solution. It's been easy to incorporate in my routine, and I love what I am seeing so far. I do want to provide one word of caution to other potential buyers. I accidentally purchased a cheaper version on Amazon that 'looked like' keyoma (silly me) and it turned out to be ENTIRELY different and not even close to the same quality. Hopefully that statement can help save some of you if you are contemplating what to purchase. All in all, I am super glad I found keyoma. If you're looking for fuller, stronger hair, I highly recommend giving this a try! I know that I will be telling my clients about it!' — Krista 'I am in love with this hair oil! I had thin edges from wearing ballerina buns for years. I started using this oil a few weeks ago, and I see significantly fuller hair 🥹. My hair also feels softer and healthier.' — Jasmine 'I am only a few weeks in and see a little difference. I learned to leave this on your scalp for a while then wash your hair. Overall I'm going to try it for two months and I was my hair twice a week bc it really dry. I'll keep everyone posted on how it does' — Amazon Customer 'I came across Keyoma Batana Oil on TikTok and decided to give it a try for my husband, who's been wanting to improve his hair health. Let me just say, it did not disappoint! From the moment we opened the bottle, we were both blown away by the smell—it's so refreshing and just a couple of weeks of using it, his hair has been feeling better and healthier. His scalp seems healthier too. He's excited about the progress, and I'm thrilled because not only is it working, but the oil makes his hair smell amazing! We love that it's natural and infused with Rosemary Oil for that extra boost. Definitely recommend this product if you're looking for something that truly works and smells fantastic!' — Shari L Cooper The Real Deal: We use deal trackers and commerce experience to sift through 'fake' hike-and-drop deals and other deceptive sales tactics. This $32 spray is my secret cure-all for eczema and acne

About a year ago, Instagram served me an ad for a facial spray marketed as a multitasking miracle. Since it used hypochlorous acid as its hero ingredient and had an aesthetically pleasing design, I was immediately intrigued by Magic Molecule's The Soultion Spray. The ad mentioned a slew of benefits, including removing bacteria, and healing eczema flare-ups, sunburns and even bug bites from skin. So as a beauty reporter and skin care enthusiast, I wanted to learn more about what it could potentially do for my skin. I've been dealing with body eczema my entire life, but in the past year, it spread to my face. Since most over-the-counter body care products are too strong for the delicate skin on my face, I haven't been able to treat the condition the way I'd like to. So I hit the checkout button on the advertisement hoping this spray would be the healing force I'd been waiting for. Cut to a full-year later and I've never been happier spending money on a product. It transformed my skin beyond what I ever imagined — my eczema flare-ups aren't as flaky, dry and red as they used to be — and it works quickly. I don't have to wait weeks to see results; I can see a visible difference on my skin within hours. What is Magic Molecule's The Solution? Magic Molecules' The Solution ($32) is an FDA-cleared hypochlorous acid spray suitable for all ages, including babies as old as one month. You can find hypochlorous acid, which is made of hydrogen, oxygen and chloride, in our white blood cells — our bodies naturally and continuously produce it, according to Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist. It's especially great for topical skin use because it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This allows it to cleanse, repair and maintain the skin, she says. Brands like Magic Molecule have replicated it (through an electrochemical process combining water, salt and an electrical current) for topical application. Magic Molecule's spray, which has the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance, can help treat concerns such as breakouts, eczema and cuts by soothing the skin, reducing redness and removing the bacteria, according to Magic Molecule. One 8-ounce bottle has a shelf life of up to 24 months and can last around 1,400 sprays. You can use this spray in three ways: post-cleansing, as a spot treatment and post-workout. Magic Molecule recommends using it after washing your face cleansing and before putting on any serums or moisturizers — as you would with a toner since it has antimicrobial and soothing properties. You can also use it on problem areas (for all ages) to heal flare-ups, cuts, diaper rash, acne, and more. Lastly, you can spray it on your skin post-workout to reduce irritation and redness and remove bacteria, according to the brand. How I use Magic Molecule's The Solution In the past year, I used the spray differently depending on the state of my skin. When I first got it, I used it as a toner during my morning skin care routine to rehydrate my skin after washing it and to reinforce a clean slate since it helps remove bacteria. I would typically close my mouth and spray it all over my face using roughly five pumps — one for each of the following areas: forehead, chin, cheeks and the center. Since it's similar to water in terms of its consistency (it has no color), I didn't worry about getting it on my clothes or in my hair. I also didn't have to wait a long time before my skin absorbed it. If you've ever used a makeup setting spray, this feels comparable because it coats your face without irritating or disrupting anything. All I have to do is fan myself and wait a minute for it to fully melt into my skin before going in with the rest of my products. When my eczema flare-ups escalated in the fall (I was experiencing small patches of dry, red and flaky bits), I stopped cleansing my skin in the morning and used this instead as a spot treatment. Following the same application method, I would add two to three sprays to the directly affected spots throughout the day but would skip it if I had makeup on since your face is supposed to be clean when using it. I also experimented with using it as a post-gym solution when I couldn't immediately wash my face. The easiest and most convenient way was to close my eyes, spray all five points of my face and let it air dry. Sometimes, if cotton balls are available in exercise studio bathrooms, I dabbled with spraying The Solution directly on some to help evenly apply the spray on my skin and remove any excess gunk. Why I love Magic Molecule's The Solution This hypochlorous acid spray has been the perfect answer to various skin issues on my face and body. I found it incredibly soothing and fast-acting. Aside from how gentle and easy it is to use, it also lasts a long time; in my year of regularly using the product, I've only had to replace the bottle once. Cleanser replacement My eczema spreading to my face was detrimental to my self-esteem. It formed a bright red, itchy, flaky, dry spot right above my eyebrow that came completely out of the blue. My skin care routine at that point was thorough and consistent — I regularly used a cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen and the occasional facial oil. When I noticed the new eczema spots , I immediately scaled back my routine focusing heavily on cleansing and moisturizing my skin. Nothing was helping so I was left wondering if I was overdrying my already dry skin by washing it too often. (My dermatologist confirmed as much to me.) To try to rehydrate my skin and heal my new face eczema I cut out my morning face wash step, replacing it with this hypochlorous acid spray. Was it a risk because I have such sensitive, reactive skin? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Simplifying my routine and swapping out my morning cleanse for this spray left my skin clean, smooth and, more importantly, soothed. Not once did I experience a burning, stinging, drying or tightening sensation with this spray and it also quickly helped restore my overdried skin barrier. Before using it, my face felt like it had no stretch because it was so tight from stripping it from its natural oils, but after swapping in this spray, that severely dry feeling and all my eczema symptoms were gone. The spray felt like magic calming water on my face and despite me cutting out a full face-wash step in my routine, I didn't notice an increase in breakouts or clogged pores, so the spray really held its own in terms of keeping my skin as clean as before without having to deal with any associated dryness. It was a win-win in my book. Since keeping my skin clean is one way I stay on top of my eczema, I also carried the mini version of Magic Molecule's spray in my gym bag to use as a cleanser post-workouts. Some gyms and studios have a face wash in their bathrooms, but I worry about trying random products because I don't know how my skin will react and tolerate them. With the travel-sized spray, I can rid my skin of bacteria, sweat and gunk. My only concern with using it in public was that people could smell it since it has a slight pool water scent, but it quickly disappears and doesn't linger on my skin. Spot treatment To prevent my eczema spots from worsening, I also experimented with using the solution as a spot treatment one to three pumps on clean skin once or twice throughout the day. When I did this, my flare-ups immediately looked less inflamed and red than before, and I noticed that any tightness and dryness were significantly reduced, so I didn't see many flakes, and my skin feels calmer. In addition to using it as an eczema treatment, I noticed my acne looked more minimized and significantly less noticeable than when I don't apply the spray. Usually, to get these results, I would have to use a prescription cream, but that could take a few days to a few weeks. This spray works quickly — when needed, I would saturate my face in the spray, focusing on the problem areas and overnight, I would see a difference in its appearance. I also tested the solution on my body whenever I had a cut or slight break in my skin, whether from shaving, falling or picking at a bug bite. It immediately helps soothe the area and reduce inflammation. I also noticed that gashes close up quicker with the spray than when I leave them alone, so it's been a great tool to have on hand to help speed healing along. Overall, I noticed my wounds looked better (as fast as the next day), and I could feel a difference in just a few hours. Any gashes or nubs were less bothersome and perhaps, best of all, the spray made me forget they were even there in the first place, so I wasn't messing with them, further delaying any healing. Size and price Hypochlorous acid sprays have always piqued my interest, and when considering which one to buy, I found that Magic Molecule's The Solution is one of the best deals on the market. The brand sells its 8 ounce-bottle for $32. Other alternatives, like Tower 28's SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray (4 ounces for $28) and Mario Badescu's Repairing Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid (4 ounces for $18), retail for a similar price but only give you half the amount of product. Considering how much I use this to maintain my skin and treat all sorts of ailments, Magic Molecule is the best for my wallet and usage. One bottle lasted me 10.5 months. I spray a lot on my face daily — 10 pumps each day (five in the morning and five at night), and occasionally, when I have a spot or flare-up, I usually add an extra 5-10 pumps depending on its severity. I've also made all my friends and family try it, so I'm sure if I toned it down a little, it could've lasted me the entire year. The bottom line Not only is it straightforward to use, there's no learning curve, but it's also highly effective. After a few days of consistently spraying my skin and problem areas, I see quick and fast results. It clears my skin of any gunk that can further exacerbate my concerns and makes it look better than before. Why trust NBC Select?
