Electric bikes recalled after multiple battery fires

(WJW) – Thousands of Santa Cruz electric bicycles have been recalled due to a fire hazard, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced. According to the CPSC, 2,850 Heckler 9 Electric Bicycles sold in the United States, as well as roughly 550 sold in Canada, were recalled on Thursday. The recall stated that the electric bike's lithium-ion battery can overheat, causing a fire hazard. Even students spoke out about $1,400 chair purchased for CMSD headquarters: I-Team Investigators said the firm received three reports of fires, including some property damage, associated with the recall. There have been no reported injuries, the CPSC said. The electric bikes, manufactured in the U.S., were sold nationwide at Santa Cruz dealers between October 2021 and January 2025 for $8,750 to $13,900. Beware: Scammers targeting personal info online as REAL ID deadline approaches They were sold with a 720W lithium-ion battery 'that sits inside a black case under the frame,' the recalled said. The bikes came in different colors, including Gloss Avocado Green and Maritime Gray. Anyone who purchased one of these recalled bikes should stop using it immediately, disconnect the battery and visit Santa Cruz's website for further details on how to get a replacement battery.
