New Hampshire State Police agree to work with ICE to enforce immigration law
The New Hampshire State Police will help enforce federal immigration law under an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the state announced Wednesday.
The Memoranda of Agreement with ICE will give troopers, once they have been certified, authority to 'perform certain immigration enforcement functions.'
Colonel Mark B. Hall, director of the state police, said New Hampshire troopers will be 'authorized and trained by ICE on how to better respond to immigration violations that they encounter.'
New Hampshire State Police will join law enforcement agencies in 24 states that have adopted a model for how to incorporate immigration enforcement into routine police activity.
According to ICE, certified officers receive 40 hours of on-line course work that covers the scope of their authority; immigration and civil rights law; complaint procedures; and obligations under federal law, among other topics.
New Hampshire troopers are expected to begin training in the coming weeks.
