Former Wexford councillor is elected as chairperson of the Gorey branch of Fine Gael
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Coach House on Monday, May 12, was the first meeting held since the General Election in November 2024. In 2024, Deputy Brian Brennan topped the poll in the new Wicklow Wexford Constituency and months prior to that in June 2024, Councillors Anthony Donohoe and Darragh McDonald took seats on the council at the local elections.
Deputy Brennan, who was recently appointed to three committees; Foreign Affairs & Trade; Enterprise, Tourism & Employment; and Arts, Media, Communications, Culture & Sport and also appointed as sub Ceann Comhairle, addressed the meeting. He began by stressing his honour to receive these appointments at national level, before he reiterated that his priority was to work for the people of north Wexford and south Wicklow.
While speaking at the AGM, Councillors Anthony Donohoe and Darragh McDonald highlighted key issues in the Gorey district. Both councillors welcomed the progress on the Market House Project in Gorey.
Cllr Donohoe discussed the lack of capacity in rural towns for wastewater and water connections which is putting pressure on housing in Gorey town. Moving forward, he is seeking greater collaboration between Wexford County Council and Uisce Éireann to ensure that rural towns and villages can continue to develop.
Similarly, Cllr McDonald outlined his role on the Strategic Policy Committee in Wexford County Council which will evaluate grant funding throughout Wexford and ensure that Gorey receives its fair share of funding.
The AGM continued with the election of officers. Former Councillor Diarmuid Devereux was elected unopposed as chairperson with Patrick Devitt elected as secretary and Joe Tully as treasurer.
There were plaudits from Deputy Brennan, Cllrs Donohoe and McDonald as well as many others, to both Robbie McCabe and Elaine Clarke who have stepped down as chairperson and secretary respectively, for the trojan work undertaken in their roles over the years.
The meeting concluded with a plan to organise a social event and reconvene for business after the summer months.
