Marshawn Lynch, star running back at Cal, on College Football Hall of Fame ballot

Marshawn Lynch, the second-leading rusher in the history of Cal football, is among those on the ballot for the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame. The National Football Foundation released the ballot Monday for the class that will be announced in January. It includes 79 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 35 coaches from lower levels. Lynch, who made the short trek from Oakland Tech High School to Berkeley, played three seasons with the Bears (2004-06), piling up 3,230 yards and 29 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 68 passes for another 600 yards and six TDs. Lynch trails Cal career rushing leader Russell White (1990-92) by 16 yards. After collecting 775 scrimmage yards and 10 TDs as a freshman, Lynch added another 10 TDs and 1,371 scrimmage yards as a sophomore before capping his career with a 1,684-yard, 15-TD junior season that included a Pac-10-leading 1,356 rushing yards. Lynch entered the NFL draft instead of playing his senior season at Cal and was taken 12th in the first round by Buffalo. In 12 NFL seasons, including two with the Raiders, he rushed for 10,413 yards and 85 TDs. Lynch is joined on the ballot by Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram, Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III and former AP National Player of the Year Ndamukong Suh. Ingram became Alabama's first Heisman winner in 2009 after running for 1,658 yards and 20 touchdowns. Newton in 2010 was just the third player in FBS history with 20 passing and 20 rushing touchdowns. Griffin in 2011 led the nation in points responsible for and ranked second in total offense. Suh was a force for Nebraska in 2009 and became the first defensive lineman in 15 seasons to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He finished fourth in voting but was honored as the nation's top player by The Associated Press. Among other players on the ballot are Iowa's Brad Banks, Colorado's Eric Bieniemy, Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant, Penn State's Ki-Jana Carter, Pittsburgh's Aaron Donald, Syracuse's Marvin Harrison, Oklahoma's Josh Heupel, Ohio State's James Laurinaitis, Washington State's Ryan Leaf,Illinois' Simeon Rice and Florida State's Peter Warrick. Among coaches on the ballot are Larry Coker, Gary Patterson and Chris Petersen. Coker led the Canes to consecutive national championship games and won the 2002 Rose Bowl to become the first rookie head coach to lead his team to a title since 1948. Patterson is TCU's all-time wins leader who led the Horned Frogs to six AP top 10 final rankings. Petersen is Boise State's all-time wins leader who led the Broncos to two undefeated seasons and led Washington to the 2016 College Football Playoff. The NFF also announced an adjustment to the eligibility criteria for coaches to be considered for induction. The minimum career winning percentage required for coaching eligibility will go from .600 to .595 beginning in 2027. The change would make Mike Leach eligible. Leach, who died in 2022, had a .596 winning percentage with a 158-107 record over 21 seasons at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State.

Legion of Boom veteran discusses pivotal moment from Super Bowl season

Legion of Boom veteran discusses pivotal moment from Super Bowl season The Seattle Seahawks are slated to face off against the Houston Texans in 2025, and on Monday Night Football no less! Seattle has only faced Houston a grand total of five times since the Texans came into existence, and the Seahawks hold a 4-1 record against them. These teams don't meet often, but when they do, it can be memorable. Take for example the greatest moment in this cross-conference rivalry: Seattle's 23-20 overtime win against Houston during the 2013 season. The Seahawks were 3-0, seeking their first ever 4-0 start in franchise history. Standing between them and a new milestone was a Texans team that was considered an early favorite in the AFC that year. After all, Houston finished 12-4 and made it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs the year prior. This was considered to be Seattle's first real test of the year. Well, it sure looked like the Seahawks were about to flunk said test, as the Texans had built a 20-3 lead at halftime. Seattle appeared to be on the verge of their first loss of the season, and potentially exposed as not quite the contender many had believed them to be. Late in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks did manage to claw their way back into the game, thanks to a touchdown run from Marshawn Lynch to cut Houston's lead to 20-13 with 7:43 left in the game. Still, it was not enough. With a little under three minutes to go, the Texans had made it to Seattle's 40-yard line and were looking to ice the victory... except Richard Sherman had something to say (as he often does) about it. Officially listed as a 58-yard return, Sherman's interception tied the game at 20-20, and sent into overtime. After trading some punts in the extended period, eventually the Seahawks claimed their 23-20 win thanks to a 45-yard field goal from kicker Stephen Hauschka. To the 12th Man - as well as fans and pundits across the country - it was the first sign this Seattle squad was more than legitimate. Turns out the team felt this way as well! Former Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond III, who was a member of the 2013 Legion of Boom, spoke about this play on Twitter. The LOB veteran gave some insight on the pick-six and what it meant to the team. The Seahawks may not have been down 20 going into the fourth, but they were still down 20-6. Truly, it wasn't just a remarkable comeback, it was one of the best defensive performances by the LOB all season long! Seattle shut Houston out over the final three quarters (including overtime) in the game.

NFL teams dropped their schedules like they're Netflix trailers

Somewhere between free agency and training camp, NFL teams discovered their real off-season Super Bowl: The schedule release video. What used to be a boring PDF drop is now a content arms race where social media departments battle for likes, retweets and the occasional legal threat from a major corporation. Trending Advertisement For 2025, teams leaned all the way into pop culture, parody and petty jabs. If your favorite squad didn't put together something chaotic and meme-able, they probably don't love you. Let's get into how we got here and how wild things got this year. The rise of the NFL season schedule drop spectacle It all started a few years ago when teams realized fans weren't just refreshing ESPN — they were scrolling through social media. What better way to build hype than to roast rivals, flex production budgets and remind everyone that the team behind their X and Instagram accounts might be more creative than the coaching staff? Advertisement It's not enough to just post the schedule. You have to drop it, preferably with a surprise cameo, a niche Gen Z reference and at least one dig at a division rival's dysfunction. This year's viral MVPs The Seattle Seahawks came through with a vintage 1980s-style action figure ad that had Marshawn Lynch, Cortez Kennedy and Devon Witherspoon all boxed up like collector's items. The disclaimers were elite ('Powdered soap not meant for human consumption'), and they even shaded divisional opponents like it was a Black Friday sale. The Chargers, always the internet's darling, returned with a Minecraft-themed banger — complete with pixelated roasts and a recreation of that viral Starbucks spat between NFL reporters Ian Rapoport and Jordan Schultz. Bonus points for not getting sued. The Titans spoofed pharmaceutical ads with 'Schedule-rizi,' treating fans suffering from Football Season Withdrawal (FSW). Side effects may include 'gridlock,' 'jock itch' and 'diarrhea.' Meanwhile, Atlanta went full 'ATL Kart,' turning Bijan Robinson into a cartoon racer zooming past opponents. Yes, they even threw shade at Bill Belichick and girlfriend Jordon Hudson — because what's a Falcons video without offseason drama? The Colts... tried it Then there was Indianapolis, who clearly wanted to play the game but fumbled the controller. Their Minecraft video got yanked shortly after posting — reportedly over a joke about Tyreek Hill's 2024 detainment or, possibly, because someone forgot to ask Mojang for permission. Their backup plan? A janky Microsoft Paint version that looked like it was drawn on a high school detention computer. Shoutout to the New York Jets, who delayed their video just to sneak in a jab: 'We had a Minecraft video ready, but decided to change it last minute.' Petty. Perfect. Music videos, mock pressers and Mario Kart meltdowns Arizona dropped a full music video starring linebacker Mack Wilson (aka Rocketship) who rapped the schedule into existence. Was it the best flow of the year? That's subjective. But it was different, and in this content war, different wins. New Orleans leaned into a 'Key & Peele'-style skit with an 'angry translator' interpreting head coach Kellen Moore's fake press conference. It was aggressive. It was awkward. It was… bold? Chicago brought in actor Lamorne Morris and his 'New Girl' co-star Jake Johnson for a bit about emailing the schedule to every Ben Johnson alive (watch here). It was weird, it was funny and it felt very Bears: High-energy chaos with a couple of fumbles baked in. The remaining NFL teams who might want to try harder next year Not everyone understood the assignment. The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a Super Bowl win, just flexed their Lombardi Trophy with 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' playing in the background. No hate (I promise), but that might be more screensaver than reveal. Buffalo phoned it in with a Josh Allen/AI joke that probably looked better on paper (respect to the NBA GOAT, though. This wasn't on him). Dallas dragged fans through 10 minutes of golf cart shenanigans. And Tampa Bay gave us Jon Gruden for 11 whole minutes. Somewhere, even the algorithm tapped out. Then there was the Cleveland Browns, who seemingly let ChatGPT direct a fever dream starring their elf mascot. Look, we get it. AI is cool. But maybe don't hand it the keys just yet. Why 2025 NFL schedule videos matter more than you think This is sports in 2025. The game doesn't start at kickoff — it starts when your schedule does. These videos might not win Emmys, but they're changing the way fans engage with their teams. They're memes, moodboards and miniature sitcoms wrapped in NFL branding. Advertisement So, come 2026, if your team drops a schedule via interpretive dance or recreates 'The Bear' with their offensive line, don't be shocked. Just hit play... and pray they don't embarrass you. Get you a bottle of Saratoga water and check out the remaining schedule clips below (shoutout to the legend Bun B). You Might Also Like

Seahawks unbox action-packed schedule release video as NFL teams vie for social media supremacy

Geek Life: Fun stories, memes, humor and other random items at the intersection of tech, science, business and culture. SEE MORE (Screen shot via YouTube) It's not enough anymore for NFL teams to simply release a schedule of who they'll be playing in the upcoming season — the hype has been turned way up, and schedule release video production is a serious social media affair in 2025. The Seattle Seahawks are among the teams getting in on the fun, with a schedule 'unboxing' video that plays off vintage toy action figure commercials. Current Seahawks star cornerback Devon Witherspoon is the star of the video, but he's joined by 'an all-pro squad of action-packed legends,' including Seahawks greats Steve Largent, Walter Jones, Kam Chancellor and Marshawn Lynch. The action figures take on a variety of inferior figures from teams on the Hawks' schedule. Our favorite moment may be a nod to the restrooms at Seattle's old stadium, complete with disclaimer: 'Not responsible for nightmares caused by Kingdome bathroom.' Watch the video below, and keep scrolling for more NFL team's efforts: Unbox the action. The Seahawks 50th Season schedule is here. Tickets sold separately » Disclaimer: Powdered soap not meant for human consumption. Please consult local fire department before playtime. No protein was harmed in the making of this video.… — Seattle Seahawks (@Seahawks) May 15, 2025 The Los Angeles Chargers appear to be the runaway winners again this year. The team got permission from Microsoft, publisher of 'Minecraft,' for a nearly 5-minute-long nod to that video game. The Indianapolis Colts went the same direction, but had to delete their video and issue a statement about why, after failing to secure proper rights with Microsoft and making a joke about Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill that didn't go over too well. Although, he thought it was funny. should we REALLY make our schedule release video in minecraft? yes yes yesyes yesyes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yesyes yes yes yes yesye yes yes yes yes yesyes — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) May 15, 2025 Sticking with the video game theme, the Atlanta Falcons went for a 'Mario Kart' treatment. Welcome to ATL Kart! — Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) May 15, 2025 And the San Francisco 49ers went old school with an 'Oregon Trail'-style video called 'Golden Trail.' When the lead character, Sourdough Sam, encounters the Seahawks on his journey, he has to choose between popular Seattle cliches to get past the opponent. It works when he chooses 'toss a fish.' The Buffalo Bills skipped the video games and toys, but stayed especially relevant for our tech times with a schedule release video that taps into AI in a clever way.
