SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his PAP team greeted voters in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC on the morning of May 4, after retaining the constituency at the General Election. A small crowd gathered at Marsiling Market as PM Wong, along with his teammates Alex Yam, Zaqy Mohamad and Hany Soh, arrived at about 8.55am to thank residents for their support. Residents lined up to congratulate and shake hands with the PAP team. One elderly woman even pulled PM Wong and each of his teammates into a bear hug. Marsiling-Yew Tee's PAP slate, which has remained the same since 2020, prevailed against a Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) team comprising Mr Jufri Salim , Mr Alec Tok, Mr Ariffin Sha and Dr Gigene Wong. The PAP team garnered 73.46 per cent of the 110,110 valid votes, against the SDP's 26.54 per cent. The PAP has won thrice in a row against the SDP in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC since its formation in 2015. PM Wong and his team later got onto an open top bus for a victory parade from Marsiling Market to Yew Tee Square, as supporters waved and cheered. On the sidelines of the event, Mr Yam told The Straits Times that the election results are a 'strong sign of support for PM (Wong)'s agenda', but a 'higher result means higher responsibility for us to deliver on what we promised for our residents'. Mr Chesda Aw , 55, was having breakfast at Marsiling Market with his wife and their two children when PM Wong and his team showed up. Asked for his thoughts on the election results, Mr Aw said: 'I wish that Workers' Party can have more seats (in Parliament) because I think they're good. 'In Tampines, they lost only by a very small percentage. And also in Punggol. You need to have some opposition in Parliament for citizens to have a say.' Mr Shariff Mazlan, 32, was out shopping with his wife and two-year-old son when he stopped to greet PM Wong and his team at Yew Tee Square to show support for the prime minister. Singapore GE2025: PAP retains supermajority, PM Wong humbled, grateful for mandate
Wong (second right) and his team successfully defended their Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC seats with 73.46 per cent of the vote, an improvement over the 63.18 per cent they received in the previous election. – Bernama photo SINGAPORE (May 4): Singapore's People's Action Party (PAP) has successfully retained its supermajority in the 2025 General Election (GE2025), winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats. The results for each electoral division were announced live on television by Returning Officer Han Kok Juan and simultaneously published on the Elections Department (ELD) website. The PAP secured a commanding win with 65.57 per cent of the national vote – marking an improvement of more than four percentage points compared to its 2020 performance. It secured five seats uncontested in the Marine Parade–Braddell Heights Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on nomination day. The resounding victory signals a strong mandate for caretaker Prime Minister and PAP secretary-general Lawrence Wong, who led the party into a general election for the first time. Speaking at a press conference following the victory, Wong said he was humbled and grateful for the results, pledging to serve all Singaporeans — regardless of how they voted — with humility and a strong sense of responsibility. Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, he noted that the results would place Singapore in a stronger position to navigate an increasingly uncertain world, especially with all key members of his team successfully elected. 'It is a clear signal of trust, stability, and confidence in your government. My immediate task is to form my cabinet. I will announce the cabinet lineup when ready,' he added. The party fielded candidates in all 33 electoral divisions – 15 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and 18 GRCs. In the 2020 General Election, the PAP won 83 of the 93 seats, securing 61.2 per cent of the vote share. This is Singapore's 19th General Election and the 14th since its independence in 1965. Wong's team at Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC successfully defended their seats with 73.46 per cent of the vote, an improvement over the 63.18 per cent they received in the previous election. 'It's been a very humbling experience, working with all of you, interacting and engaging with all of you. We are grateful once again for your strong mandate, and we will honour it,' Wong said, addressing supporters at Yio Chu Kang Stadium after the official result for his GRC was announced. The main opposition Workers' Party (WP) failed to make further gains this year but successfully retained its 10 seats in the constituencies it won in GE2020 – Hougang SMC, Sengkang GRC, and Aljunied GRC. Wong said WP would also have two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats if they chose to accept it. 'I look forward to the contributions of the opposition members in Parliament,' he said at the press conference. Other opposition parties, namely Red Dot United, Progress Singapore Party, People's Alliance for Reform, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), People's Power Party, National Solidarity Party, Singapore United Party, Singapore People's Party, and Singapore Democratic Alliance, ended their campaigns without winning any seats. It was also another disappointing result for veteran opposition figure and SDP secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan, who has been part of the country's political landscape since 1992. He lost to the PAP's Poh Li San in the newly created Sembawang West SMC. Meanwhile, the two independent candidates contesting Radin Mas SMC and Mountbatten SMC saved their S$13,500 deposits after securing at least 12.5 per cent of the vote. The final result announced by the Returning Officer was for Tampines GRC on Sunday (4 May) at 1.50 am. According to the ELD, a total of 2,429,281 votes were cast in Singapore at the close of polls for GE2025, including 42,829 rejected votes. This made up 92.47 per cent of the 2,627,026 registered electors in all contested electoral divisions. Lawrence Wong lead politics results Singapore Singapore GE2025

Voters overwhelmingly endorsed the ruling party, which secured 87 of 97 seats in an election that took place against a backdrop of global uncertainty and trade wars. They gave Prime Minister Lawrence Wong the clear mandate that he had sought, in his first electoral contest as head of government and leader of the PAP. Constituencies tipped to be fierce battlegrounds – Punggol GRC, Tampines GRC and Jalan Kayu SMC – were in the PAP's grip by 11pm, when all sample count results were in. GE2025: PM Wong's PAP team retains Marsiling Yew-Tee GRC with 73.46 per cent of the votes
SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has led his PAP team in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC to a win against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) wit h 73.46 per cent of the votes, in his first election as prime minister. This marked an improvement from 2020 when his PAP team defeated SDP with 63.18 per cent of the votes, and from 2015, when PAP won by 68.73 per cent. In his acceptance speech at Yio Chu Kang Stadium, PM Wong thanked the voters of the constituency for 'the strong mandate' they had given him and his team. 'This is my first election as prime minister and secretary-general of the PAP. So it has been a very humbling experience working with all of you, interacting and engaging with all of you.' The PAP's Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC slate remains unchanged from 2020 and also consists of Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower Zaqy Mohamad, 50; North West District Mayor Alex Yam, 43; and Ms Hany Soh, 37. Their SDP opponents were party organising secretary Jufri Salim, 41; theatre director Alec Tok, 60; alternative media site Wake Up Singapore's founder Ariffin Sha, 27; and Dr Gigene Wong, 59, a former businesswoman. PM Wong also fared better than his predecessor, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his first general election as prime minister. In SM Lee's first election as prime minister in 2006, the Ang Mo Kio GRC team anchored by him beat the WP with 66.1 per cent of the votes, slightly below the PAP's national average of 66.6 per cent. PM Wong's margin of victory in his GRC is also comparable to that of Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong's maiden election as prime minister in 1991: Mr Goh's Marine Parade GRC swept 77.3 per cent of the votes against the now defunct Singapore Justice Party, well above the PAP's national average of 61.0 per cent. Mr Abdul Samad, a PAP supporter from the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, was all smiles at Yio Chu Kang Stadium on May 3. 'I have no doubt that he will win,' said the 52-year-old of PM Lawrence Wong. 'When I saw other (PAP candidates) also win, to me that sends a strong signal that we are in safe hands for the next five years.' Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC was first formed in 2015 from parts of Chua Chu Kang GRC and Sembawang GRC that had seen significant population growth. It is one of nine constituencies whose boundaries were kept intact by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee in its March 11 report. It now has 119,559 voters, up from 117,077 in 2020. PM Wong and Mr Yam have represented Marsiling Yew-Tee GRC since its formation in 2015. The PAP and SDP have had straight fights in the constituency in the last three general elections. At the 2025 General Election, Mr Ariffin of the SDP said some people had called his team the 'suicide squad' for contesting in PM Wong's constituency. Cost of living concerns took centre stage during the election. Most opposition parties, including the SDP, criticised the Government's decision to raise the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 7 per cent to 9 per cent despite inflationary pressures. SDP's manifesto called for the GST to be reduced back to 7 per cent, and its chief Chee Soon Juan said that the tax on luxury goods could be raised to 13 or 14 per cent. In response to criticisms over the GST hike, PM Wong said at the Fullerton rally on April 28 said that foreigners, tourists and higher-income families pay the entire GST of 9 per cent, while permanent GST vouchers ensure that the lower- and middle-income Singaporeans pay less than the headline GST rate. In the middle of the hustings, SDP's Marsiling Yew-Tee GRC candidate Gigene Wong drew the ire of netizens for using a racial slur to refer to Mr Ariffin, her teammate. At the party's rally on April 26, she had referred to Mr Ariffin as 'keling kia', a derogatory term historically used to demean people of Indian descent. She also mispronounced his name, calling him 'elephant' instead of 'Ariffin'. At a rally the next day, Dr Chee and Dr Wong apologised to Singaporeans and Mr Ariffin for the faux pas. She said she did not know that the term she used was disrespectful and harmful, but that was no excuse for her actions. Speaking to The Straits Times at the SDP's assembly ground at MOE (Evans) Stadium after the sample count was released on May 3, SDP chairman Paul Tambyah said he believed that the incident had not significantly affected the party's vote share in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He noted that the SDP team in the constituency was led by Mr Jufri, a first-time candidate, and had comprised relatively new candidates. He added that the party had performed as expected in the constituency. Professor Tambyah added that the party had taken swift disciplinary action against Dr Wong, such as by issuing her a stern warning and restricting her public speaking engagements following the incident. Speaking to the media at MOE Evans Stadium, Mr Ariffin encouraged young people to never give up on their dreams and to keep striving.
