A Canadian man, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute and now faces federal prosecution in the United States. The driver claimed that while transporting vegetables to Georgia, his truck had broken down, and he unknowingly picked up the trailer in Michigan, which contained the drugs. Later that day, the driver was arrested when he attempted to cross back into Canada. 5 5 Next Stay Playback speed 1x Normal Back 0.25x 0.5x 1x Normal 1.5x 2x 5 5 / Skip Ads by Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Never Put Eggs In The Refrigerator. Live Events This crossing has become a center of drug distribution and trafficking, as this cocaine seizure is the third in the last month. Officers seized 339 pounds of cocaine on April 15 and intercepted 116 pounds on March 21. With increasing trends of drug smuggling, tackling this issue has become a challenge for the authorities of both countries. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) seized over 419 kilograms of suspected cocaine worth $11 million at the Blue Water Bridge in Ontario. Authorities have deployed new canine teams, drones, and mobile surveillance towers to improve detection capabilities and address the rise in illicit trafficking. Additionally, the government has responded with a commitment to enhance border security through technological advancements and increased personnel. Authorities remain determined to protect both nations from the harmful effects of the drug trade as the fight against drug smuggling continues.

Border officials in Michigan seize 3rd bulk discovery of cocaine in a month
April 28 (UPI) -- U.S. border agents in Michigan intercepted nearly 200 pounds of cocaine on its way north to Canada in a third seizure of the illicit drug in weeks time, according to federal officials. "Safe and secure international commerce is essential to protecting the homeland," Marty C. Raybon, director of CBP field operations in Michigan, said Monday in a release. Last week, some 193 ponds of cocaine was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers after they randomly selected a Canada-bound commercial truck for search during outbound enforcement operations near the U.S. point of entry at the Ambassador Bridge. The driver, an unidentified Canadian citizen, faces federal prosecution in the United States. "It's amazing enforcement work by all involved," said Port Director Marc Calixte. An examination of the trailer on April 20 revealed "several" bricks of a "white powdery substance" that was concealed within two duffel bags and later confirmed to be cocaine via testing. The cocaine was seized along with the truck and trailer. This was now the third bulk cocaine seizure by field agents in Detroit since last month. Normally, Border Patrol agents seize illicit drugs at the border with Mexico. However, more than 1,500 pounds of cocaine have been seized at Michigan ports of entry since October 2024. In December, Canada said it was investing $1.3 billion to "bolster security at the border and strengthen the immigration system, all while keeping Canadians safe." The case remains under investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigations.

More than 330 pounds of cocaine seized near Ambassador Bridge
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection says officers in Detroit intercepted 339 pounds of cocaine on Tuesday near the Ambassador Bridge port of entry. Federal officers selected a Canada-bound commercial vehicle for examination and uncovered "bricks of a white powdery substance concealed within two duffel bags and four moving boxes," according to a news release. Testing confirmed the substance was cocaine. The driver, an Indian citizen, faces federal charges, according to CBP. "Our ports of entry are not thoroughfares for illegal drugs and we will continue to hold the line against transnational criminal activity," said acting Port Director David Beculheimer in a statement. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is investigating. CBP says more than 1,500 pounds of cocaine have been seized at Michigan ports of entry during fiscal year 2025. "We work diligently to enable fair, competitive, and compliant trade and a significant part of that is stopping those who seek to exploit import and export processes for illicit gain," said director of field operations Marty C. Raybon in a statement. "With the support of our regional law enforcement partners, we will continue to hold these bad actors accountable."

U.S. border patrol seizes over 52 kg of cocaine bound for Canada
U.S. border officials say they have seized more than 52 kilograms of cocaine bound for Canada at the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ont. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers selected a commercial vehicle leaving the U.S. for Canada for examination on March 21. "[A] subsequent physical inspection conducted by officers revealed three garbage bags of suspected narcotics concealed behind stacks of lumber," a statement read. "The illicit cargo was confirmed to be cocaine through subsequent testing." CBP said a total of 50 bricks of cocaine were seized and the Canadian driver faces federal charges. The case remains under investigation. "This is a testament to the quality of work performed by those who work tirelessly to combat transnational crime and stem the flow of dangerous drugs through our communities," said Marty C. Raybon, director of field operations for CBP. "Border security is a team effort, and I applaud the outstanding work by our officers and our regional law enforcement partners." The cocaine seizure comes amid heightened security at the Canada-U.S. border, including to stem the flow of fentanyl, in part as a result of concerns raised by President Donald Trump. Canada has represented less than one per cent of all seized fentanyl imports into the U.S., according to federal data. About 19.5 kilograms was seized at the northern border last year compared to 9,570 kilograms at the southwestern border.
