Aiken County Detention Center holds GED graduation ceremony
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Several inmates in Aiken County received their GED in a graduation ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Sheriff Marty Sawyer and Aiken County Schools Superintendent Dr. Corey Murphy took part in the ceremony at Aiken County Detention Center, as five inmates were given their diplomas.
'These gentlemen today actually obtained their GED,' said Garen Cofer, Aiken County Education Director. 'There're four sections to it math, science, social studies and English. That's a very complex task.'
'I'm feeling quite ecstatic,' said Robert Pounds, Jr. 'I'm grateful for the department for allowing us to to be able to partake in those things in the program. And I'm glad that I got my GED.'
The program's goal is to ensure inmates have the tools to be successful upon release.
