Robert Downey Jr. Continues to Reveal Doctor Doom Story Teases

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Robert Downey Jr. continues to have fun teasing fans from the set of "Avengers: Doomsday". On Thursday, the Marvel icon posted an image to his Instagram account which he captioned "Doom workstation essentials." You can see the image below. Read More: Official 'Superman' Trailer is Bursting With First Looks at Heroes and Villains Far be it from us to minimize the need for Kleenex while playing Victor von Doom, but the most potentially revealing addition to the workstation is the copy of "Doom" #1 by Sanford Greene and Jonathan Hickman. This giant-sized one-shot was released in 2024, and it's a very interesting comic for someone to be reading in preparation for "Avengers: Doomsday". Robert Downey Jr. speaks onstage during the Marvel Studios Panel in Hall H at SDCC in San Diego, California on July 27, Disney The plot of "Doom" #1 revolves around an alternate version of the Marvel Universe in which the world-eating Galactus - the villain of the upcoming "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" - kills all the superheroes and supervillains, leaving only Doctor Doom to defeat him. On one hand, considering "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" will be the last Marvel film to release before "Avengers: Doomsday", Downey's showcasing of "Doom" #1 makes it tempting to theorize that this means Galactus will have something to do with "Doomsday". This could actually make a bit of sense. In the comics, Galactus is the last survivor of a dying universe before he arrives in the prime Marvel universe. So it would potentially track for Galactus to somehow travel from the Fantastic Four's home universe to Earth-616. On the other hand, it could just be pointing to something that has been said about Downey's version of Doctor Doom ever since his casting was announced; that every villain is the hero of his own story. Doctor Doom is certainly not only the hero of "Doom" #1, but quite literally the only hero left. So it could be that Downey is reading the comic not for plot points, but for the feel of Doctor Doom as a hero. "Avengers: Doomsday" is scheduled to hit theaters May 1, 2026. It is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr. More Comics: Superman Battles Brutal Villain in New Teaser Nicolas Cage Becomes 'Spider-Noir' in First Look Trailer

Robert Downey Jr. Teases Doctor Doom In New Image

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Robert Downey Jr. just released an image of himself on Instagram seemingly to help promote a friend's endeavor as well as to tease fans with his upcoming role in "Avengers: Doomsday". The image shows Downey flexing and showing off some muscles, while reading fellow Marvel star Jeremy Renner's memoir, "My Next Breath". You can see the image below. "DO NOT KNOCK," the sign commands. Instead, "Trust Yourself." Robert Downey Jr. speaks onstage during the Marvel Studios Panel in Hall H at SDCC in San Diego, California on July 27, 2024. Robert Downey Jr. speaks onstage during the Marvel Studios Panel in Hall H at SDCC in San Diego, California on July 27, Disney You can also see what appear to be motion capture markers on Downey's head and face, implying either he's just about to start, in the middle of, or just finished doing motion capture work for "Avengers: Doomsday" as Doctor Doom. The caption reads, "Reading Renner's book and feeling stronger a journey to wisdom ... very instructive...a must read!" Renner responded quickly, writing, "Long way from the ICU.... At least we know how this story ends my brother. Love you" and ending with a smiley face/heart emoji. It was in January 2023 when Jeremy Renner came close to dying after a snow plow accident. The "Hawkeye" star walked away with dozens of broken bones, a lacerated liver, and a collapsed lung. His memoir "My Next Breath" is Renner's account of the accident, his recovery, and the lessons he learned along the way. It's somewhat ironic that Renner is so heavily referenced in one of the earliest images to come out of the "Avengers: Doomsday" production considering he's one of the few Marvel actors who hasn't been announced as part of the cast. In fact, he recently revealed that he would have happily jumped on board to make "Hawkeye" season 2, except that he was offered half of what he was given to make the first season. "Avengers: Doomsday" is scheduled to hit theaters May 1, 2026. It is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr. More Comics: Fan-Favorite 'Captain America' Star Wants in on 'Avengers: Doomsday' Peacemaker Meets the Justice League in Season 2 First Look

New Report Explains Why The MCU Has Been Mostly Bad Since ‘Endgame'

Thunderbolts: Not bad Thunderbolts is currently on pace to be a big win for Marvel, its best critic scores in years, its best audience scores close to ever, and what looks like it's going to be a solid box office haul. That of course, has been something of a rarity in the post-Endgame era, with perilously few exceptions. Now, a new Wall Street Journal report dives into what apparently happened here, focused around the architect of the MCU, Kevin Feige. Among the highlights: SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 27: Robert Downey Jr. speaks onstage during the Marvel Studios Panel in ... More Hall H at SDCC in San Diego, California on July 27, 2024. (Photo byfor Disney) Daredevil: Born Again The idea overall appears to be…make less stuff, but make better stuff. That seems wise, but I think we're still in a questionable era at the moment, Thunderbolts and Daredevil: Born Again aside, and we may have to get through a bunch of mucky productions before this full reset happens. And the thing I'm worried about the most right now is Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars.
