Power restored at BWI after fire causes Monday morning terminal outages

BALTIMORE — Power was restored at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Monday after a fire near the airport caused outages in the main terminal, leading to delays and long lines. A Maryland Aviation Administration spokesperson said that full power had been restored by around 11:15 a.m. after the outages killed power in the airport's main terminal and hourly garage. The outage shut down security for several hours and caused airlines to delay and divert flights. A total of 146 flights in and out of BWI had been delayed, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. 'Our electrical team worked throughout the morning to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,' MAA spokesperson Jonathan Dean said. The outage was related to a fire and wires down in the area of West Baltimore & Annapolis Road and Park 100 Drive just south of the airport, according to a Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. spokesperson. Anne Arundel County Police posted on social media around 8:30 a.m. that the fire created a road closure. After bringing power back online, BGE was working with the airport to 'ensure permanent resolution of any equipment issues,' a spokesperson for the utility, Stephanie Weaver, said. 'We will make an organized chaos line here,' a Southwest desk agent said over the terminal's P.A. system after power came back on. 'Just bear with us; we're gonna start getting this line rocking and rolling here shortly.' Leah McCormick arrived at BWI at around 9 a.m. to fly to Louisville — though her 11:20 a.m. flight ultimately got rescheduled for 9:30 p.m. 'It's not the most convenient,' she said. --------- Baltimore Sun photographer Lloyd Fox contributed to this article. ---------
