Guard Chief: Constitution binds us 'no matter how crazy things may get'

BOSTON (SHNS) – To the tune of the 215th Army Band, families of Massachusetts veterans who lost their lives during or as a result of service gathered Tuesday with state leaders in anticipation of Memorial Day and in recognition of their loved ones' sacrifices. Massachusetts National Guard Major General Gary Keefe used the occasion to remind Bay Staters to tell the stories of service members and their 'unwavering loyalty' to the country and its Constitution. 'Because of the service members of the families we have here today, our Constitution still exists as a beacon of hope for everything. No matter what's going on down in D.C., the Constitution is what will always bind us together, not just as Americans, but as humans,' Keefe said Tuesday in Memorial Hall. 'No matter how crazy things may get when you're watching whatever news stations you watch, the rest of the world understands that when push comes to shove, bad things happen, and partners and allies need help, we are the first to ring the bell, answer the bell, and we are the first to make sure that our values are based on our Constitution,' Keefe continued. Keefe's comments come as several Massachusetts leaders have suggested the country has approached, or might reach, a Constitutional crisis — the result of questions as to whether the Trump administration will uphold the Constitution. 'Regardless if you wear a uniform or not, regardless of where you come from, what your background is, what your religion is, what color you are, what sexual preference, it does not matter,' Keefe said. 'We bind together as Americans, and we protect that Constitution.' Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, alongside Keefe, Secretary of Veterans Services Jon Santiago and First Lady Joanna Lydgate, presented medals to next of kin of service men and women from Massachusetts. Healey and Driscoll presented three Massachusetts Medals of Liberty to next of kin of those killed in action or in the line of duty, or who died as a result of wounds received in action. The pair presented six Massachusetts Medals of Fidelity to next of kin of those who died as the result of service-related PTSD, a traumatic brain injury or related conditions or injuries. The medals are a physical manifestation of service, Santiago said, but also a way to remind veterans and their families of state support. 'As long as we're here, we always have your back. We honor your sacrifice,' Santiago said. The legacies of those who have given their lives to service are represented in the individual stories of each veteran, and in the conversations had with service families, Santiago said. Those conversations help inform the state's legislation and services, he added. Donation combats illicit narcotic trafficking

SPRINGFIELD — A decade-long effort to curb illicit drug trafficking in the region was recently buttressed by an investment in new equipment. Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced at a press conference on May 12 that his office and the State Police have received a $285,000 donation from the Massachusetts National Guard's counterdrug program to help combat transnational criminal organizations, violent gangs and other drug trafficking organizations in the area. Among the new equipment funded by the donation are a gray key — a tool for mobile devices that extracts critical information in narcotics investigations — and TruNarc, which is used for rapid analysis and identification of dangerous narcotics. It also funds a Cellebrite to help manage and organize data from mobile devices in narcotics investigations or prosecutions; as well as a handheld backscatter, which detects narcotics and other contraband through X-ray imagery in homes or vehicles. Additionally, the money finances an MX 908 drug analyzer for 'highly accurate' and 'more sensitive' analysis of dangerous drugs, even in trace amounts. In his remarks to the press, Gulluni said the new equipment will be accessible to his office's task forces, as well as local and state law enforcement. 'The danger of illicit narcotics to our communities has not abated,' Gulluni said. 'As drug dealers and traffickers adopt new methods and acquire new ways to infiltrate our communities, we must stay ahead of them and similarly continue to adapt and evolve our methods of investigation and interdiction.' Investment in new equipment comes at a time when the number of opioid-related fatal overdoses across the state has remained steady over the past several years. According to Gulluni, Massachusetts experienced between 2,100 to 2,300 opioid-related fatal overdoses over the last few years, and Hampden County specifically has seen an increase in recent years. In 2015, Gulluni's office signed a memorandum of understanding with the state's National Guard to tackle drug trafficking problems that are exacerbating the opioid crisis. The partnership was renewed in 2018. 'I have said many times, we have to aid and support those suffering from the disease of addiction, but we must also simultaneously deter and arrest those who profit from it,' Gulluni said. The National Guard's counterdrug program has helped law enforcement in each state combat illicit drug trafficking since its inception in 1989, according to Gary Keefe, adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard. 'We in the guard, we look at these drugs now as weapons,' Keefe said. 'We're very proud to do what we can to continue to support the mission of getting rid of this and making sure that Hampden County and the neighborhoods in Hampden County are safer places for people to live and raise families.' Gulluni mentioned that the National Guard's global reach is 'a huge aspect of assistance' on his office's work in the realm of 'bigger narcotics investigations.' As part of the program, the guard has assigned specialized personnel to support both the Hampden DA's SAFE Narcotics Task Force and the State Police's Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team, according to his office. 'Some of the analysis, linguistic services, etc., are things that locally or even at the state level we might not have access to,' Gulluni said. 'So, the federal government through the National Guard can provide that here at the very organic local level to assist us and collaborate to make sure that we're doing our best work.' Aside from Gulluni's partnership with the state police and National Guard, his office also works with the New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, a regional organization that provides funding resources, facilitates and enhances coordination of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in designated areas. David Kelley, the deputy director of NEHIDTA, said the organization runs several projects to combat illicit drug trafficking, including its domestic highway enforcement program. 'The I-91 corridor that travels through this state and this county is patrolled by the Massachusetts State Police,' Kelley said. 'I will tell you that their efforts on [I-]91 to intercept and prevent drugs from entering these communities is nothing less than stellar, and I am very, very proud that we were able to play a role here today.' Large brush fire burns on Joint Base Cape Cod, smoke seen for miles

Thick smoke poured into the sky over Cape Cod, spreading for miles Thursday afternoon. Officials said the flames were coming from a large brush fire burning on Joint Base Cape Cod. Army National Guard officials said the fire started as a planned controlled burn, which is a way to mitigate forest fires, but then the flames moved outside the designated area, turning into a brush fire. Officials said the fire was contained on Camp Edwards. 150 acres impacted According to the Massachusetts National Guard, 133 acres were scheduled for Thursday's burn and approximately 150 acres have been impacted. The hazy horizon wasn't too inviting, cutting Kyle Massey's fishing trip short at the Cape Cod Canal. A helicopter drops water on a brush fire at Joint Base Cape Cod. CBS Boston "It's crazy because last week I was fishing in New Jersey and I heard about the fires and I didn't know about it then I come down here today same thing, can't' escape it," said Massey. The windy and dry conditions were not helping as responders said the smoke drifted to several areas of Bourne. "I work on the other military base over there, it was pretty crazy yesterday morning too, working the overnight shift, it was like poof, you couldn't even see in the parking lot," said John Frawley. "It looks like fog, you come outside it looks like fog. Walking around Its like World War II or something," said Jonathan James. With an extensive effort underway to put out the smoke and fire, locals waited in confidence it wouldn't be much longer. "Just pray and keep your fingers crossed," said Frawley. First responders asked resident not to call 911 to report the haze or smoke, saying only call if you see visible flames near you.
