2 northeast Nebraska cities receive funds for community, recreation centers

LINCOLN, Neb. (KCAU) — Two cities in northeast Nebraska received state funds for the planning stages of 2 projects for community and recreation centers. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development announced the City of Battle Creek obtained $15,000. The money would be used towards the Battle Creek Master Park Plan. There's also a local cash match of $15,000. Officials said JEO Consulting Group will create the plan for Battle Creek Park to guide improvements that would enhance recreation and accessibility. The master plan will focus on multiple key amenities including: The swimming pool Ball diamonds Tennis & basketball courts Soccer fields Picnic areas Sioux City council again defers decision on Human Rights Commission The Nebraska Department of Economic Development said the plan would assess the clubhouse to make sure the space is still useful for community events. The playgrounds at Battle Creek Park, including one with a WWII armored vehicle, will be evaluated for safety and appeal. The City of Newman Grove received $15,000 for the Newman Grove Community Center and Library planning study. The project also received a local cash match of $15,000. The city is working with a local donor to build a new library, while at the same time, the Newman Grove Public Schools and the city's economic development advisory board is working on planning and fundraising for a new community center. State officials said the study is a chance to complete community engagement, planning activities, and programming to prepare the city to move towards building the new community center. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development said $5.54 million of awards went to a total of 21 grant recipients under the Civic and Community Center Financing Fund.
