Blind man dies after falling into Ghatkopar stn's platform gap
Mumbai: A blind Badlapur man died after falling into the gap between a Parel-Thane local train and platform 1 at Ghatkopar station on Friday night.
Sanjay Jagjappa Matange (51) was reportedly standing near the Kalyan-end of the platform under a newly built foot overbridge.
Police sources said he appeared to lose consciousness and slipped into the narrow space between the train's first coach and the platform.
Alerted by the motorman, railway and police staff went under the train to pull him out, and CPR and chest compressions were administered. "Despite all efforts, there was no response," said an officer. "Given the urgency, instead of waiting for an ambulance, the team rushed him to Rajawadi hospital in an auto." Matange was declared dead at the hospital. Police found an Army canteen card on him bearing his name, through which they learnt that he was blind.
His next of kin were contacted.
Train services were briefly delayed after the incident. —Manthan K Mehta
