TxDOT's El Paso District honored for Fabens Bridge replacement project
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) El Paso District was awarded the 'We Build Texas' award for the Fabens Bridge Replacement project during the 2025 TxDOT Construction, Materials and Alternative Delivery Conference.
According to TxDOT, the project replaced a two-lane bridge to minimize the impact of a 13-mile detour.
Fabens is the first or last fuel and facility stop for 90 miles and that portion of Interstate 10 has an estimated average daily traffic of 22,041 or 40 percent being commercial trucks, TxDOT said.
'We worked collaboratively with our contractor, Dan Williams Company, to minimize the impactsof the project to the Fabens/Clint community, surrounding businesses, and interstate travelers,' TxDOT El Paso District Engineer Tomas Trevino said. 'The lengthy detour was especiallychallenging for first responders.'
The Fabens Bridge was originally constructed in 1960, and the project added the following to the bridge:
Addition of four columns to assist with structural redundancy
Two additional feet of vertical clearance to allow larger oversized loads to pass underneath
Shoulders on both sides
Concrete rail instead of metal
According to TxDOT, the bridge project finished earlier than scheduled, resulting in cost savings of roughly $4.7 million.
The 'We Build Texas' award recipients in the same category included the Fort Worth and Austin districts.
