Springfield unveils 'Remembering Us' quilt for dementia awareness

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It was a special day in Springfield on Tuesday, with the community creating a quilt made of love. The city celebrated the first-ever unveiling of a community quilt, bringing awareness to dementia. The Dementia Friendly Coalition and the Department of Elder Affairs took the lead of this open forum and presentation. Maternal Child Health Summit held in Springfield The quilt showed photos of loved ones who have dementia and messages to inspire others. Dozens of locals worked together to bring the vision to life. 'The community rose to the occasion,' said Dementia Friendly Coalition Chairperson Zee Johnson. 'We had over 75 people come and wanted to put together a panel, something that could provide memories of their loved ones. There is no shame, you know, you can live a quality life with dementia.' Dementia is a condition that impacts millions of families worldwide, but the city of Springfield put its own spin on the event. They even gave the quilt a name: 'Remembering Us.' The quilt will travel to five other locations in the city so that everyone will have a chance to see the work of art.
