Russia steps up use of new military technologies against Ukraine, including AI

Bursts of automatic gunfire rang out some hundred meters away. The soldiers chatting on the side of the road connecting Sloviansk and Dobropillia in eastern Ukraine at first paid no attention. But, when a buzzing sound filled the air, someone shouted: "Drone!" A confused voice asked, "Ours or the enemy's?" Soldiers at the nearby Ukrainian military checkpoint had already answered the question with their weapons. The troops ran to take cover under the trees and bushes below. The loitering munition continued its course in the sky, then vanished from sight. No one was sure what exactly had just flown over them. The nearest Russian positions were 20 kilometers away, a distance considered relatively safe and out of reach for most enemy attack drones. "The situation is deteriorating rapidly," said Maxime, an officer with the 14 th assault brigade, Tchervona Kalyna ("Red Viburnum"), who was not authorized to give his last name. "That drone had wings. It was either a Molniya or a Matka." The officer explained that the latter is a "mother drone," which carries four small loitering munitions, or kamikaze drones. This mother drone doubles the range of Russian attack drones. It is also used for aerial reconnaissance and for guiding its "children" to their targets. "We saw the first Matka 10 months ago. Since then, it's been improved and has spread everywhere. The road to Dobropillia is heavily targeted now. There are destroyed vehicles everywhere, including civilian ones. If the 'children' don't find a high-value target [armored vehicles or artillery], they start to strike anything that's alive."

Gangster who killed businessman in Delhi gunned down

Five months after he gunned down the wrong man in a Delhi market, a sharpshooter from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district on Wednesday night. Naveen Kumar, who had more than 20 cases of murder, kidnapping and robbery against him, died in a joint operation by the Delhi Police Special Cell and UP Special Task Force (STF) around 10.30 pm in the Hapur Kotwali area, marking the first arrest in the mistaken identity murder case. The gangster and his associate Sachin Golu had shot dead 52-year-old businessman Sunil Jain in Delhi's Farsh Bazaar area last December, firing nearly half a dozen bullets as he returned home on his two-wheeler from a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex. Police later discovered that Jain was killed by mistake. The actual target was a man who, along with gangster Anil alias Sonu Matka, had planned the murder of Golu's friend Akash Sharma. The killing was part of a spiral of gang violence that began on Diwali when Matka and his aide shot dead Akash Sharma, 40, and his 16-year-old nephew Rishabh at their Farsh Bazaar home. A video of the double murder was uploaded on social media, triggering the revenge killing that claimed Jain's life. 'While Matka was held in an encounter, Kumar and Golu managed to hide for months. Golu is still hiding,' a senior police officer said. The case involved a deadly rivalry between the Lawrence Bishnoi and Hashim Baba gangs, with Matka being a close aide of Baba. Delhi police and UP STF had tracked down Matka to Meerut in December and killed him in an encounter. A breakthrough came in February when police arrested Delhi Police sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh for helping the fugitives. 'Based on technical surveillance and call records, we arrested sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh. We found he was helping Golu hide and sent him money,' the officer said. Following Singh's arrest, police intensified their search for Kumar and Golu. A tip-off revealed that Kumar had emerged from hiding in Hapur and was planning to target another rival gangster. Additional director general of police (STF) Amitabh Yash said the joint team from STF Noida unit and Delhi Police special cell came under fire when they tried to intercept a group of armed men in the Hapur area around 10.30 pm. 'A gun battle followed in which Naveen Kumar was seriously wounded. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,' Yash said. The STF confirmed that Kumar was wanted in connection with a murder and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) case registered at Delhi's Farsh Bazaar police station.

Religious leader held under POCSO charges

Belagavi police arrested the head of a religious institution on charges of repeated rape on a minor girl. Officers from Mudalagi police station arrested Hathayogi Lokeshwar Swami of Ram Mandir Mutt in Mekali village of Raibag taluk on Thursday (May 22, 2025). The victim complained to the police that the swami kidnapped her and repeatedly raped her in lodges in Raichur and Bagalkot. He left her at the Mahalingpur bus stand and threatened to kill her in case she revealed the offence to anyone. The victim is the daughter of a devotee. Her family took her to the Mutt as some family members believed their illness could be cured by the swami. The accused picked her up in the guise of giving her a lift when she was walking home from a relative's house in a village. The alleged offence was committed on May 13, 14 and 15. She took some time to complain to her father, who encouraged her to file a police complaint. Initially, a complaint was filed at a police station in the Bagalkot district. It was later transferred to Belagavi district, police said. Police have registered a case under some provisions of POCSO Act and BNS. The accused hailed from a village in Kalaburagi district and had set up a Math after a local farmer donated some land, villagers told the police. Following a tip-off from villagers, police raided the math and found some weapons like machetes and rods. Some villagers have told the police that the swami was involved in black magic and supported illegal betting practices like Matka. SP Bheemashankar S Guled told reporters in Belagavi on Saturday that the accused was produced in court and sent to the Hindalaga prison after the court remanded him in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
