1,200 couples tie knot under mass marriage programme in UP
Speaking at the programme, Adityanath said the real government is the one that can go to people's house and solve their problems. Addressing the Mukhyamnatri Saamoohik Vivaah Samaaroh — the mass marriage ceremony of 1,200 couples held at the premises of Hindustan Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited on Tuesday — Adityanath said, 'To make India the biggest power in the world, we have to think about every person sitting at the last rung of the society. We have to bring a change in their lives. To bring about this change, the government has started programmes like Matru Vandana Yojana, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao Yojana, Kanya Sumangala Yojana and Ayushman Yojana. The mass marriage scheme is also a symbol of this progressive thinking.' The government has increased the expenditure per couple under the mass marriage scheme from Rs 51,000 to Rs 1 lakh from this year, a statement issued here said. Gorakhpur (UP), May 27 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said every person from the last rung of the society need to be uplifted to make India the biggest power in the world. He said the mass marriage programme is a step after the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme. It is also an attack on social stereotypes like child marriage, polygamy and dowry system. 'If we want to save the daughter, we have to educate her, we have to empower her. We will have to make all the arrangements to take the daughter forward,' Adityanath said, adding that in 2017, the government started the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana for the education of the daughter from birth to graduation to end the suffering of the poor. Under this, about 24 lakh girls from poor and deprived families of the state are being given an amount of Rs 25,000 for education from birth to graduation. The chief minister said that after the birth of a daughter, a fixed amount is deposited in her account as soon as she registers. A fixed amount is also given when the daughter turns one year old and is administered all the vaccines. After this, a fixed amount is sent to the account after the daughter enters Class 1, Class 6 and Class 9 and further on taking admission in ITI, diploma or other courses. Today this amount is becoming a support for the security of the daughter. Adityanath said that today, poor parents do not worry about their daughters' marriage due to the Chief Minister's mass marriage scheme. Apart from the chief minister, MLAs and other public representatives also participated in the programme. Hitting out at the previous government, Adityanath said that before 2017, only Rs 20,000 were given by the Social Welfare Department for girls belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. This amount, which was greatly insufficient, was released with discrimination, not everyone got it. Those who got it, did not get it on time. He said when the Mukhyamnatri Saamoohik Vivaah Yojana was started in 2017, the amount was increased to Rs 35,000, later to Rs 51,000 and from April 1 this year, to Rs 1 lakh. In this, Rs 60,000 will be deposited in the daughter's account. The remaining amount will be spent on household items, girl's jewelry and food and other arrangements. The government is doing this work to bring change in the lives to give up social evils like dowry system and child marriage. As many as 1,200 couples tied the sacred knot during the ceremony organised by the Social Welfare Department. PTI NAV RUK RUK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Contractual NHM staff may get permanent jobs; honorarium hike planned
Nagpur: Thousands of contractual healthcare workers under the National Health Mission (NHM) in Maharashtra may soon be regularised into govt service, bringing long-awaited relief and job security, health minister Prakash Abitkar announced in Mumbai. Abitkar instructed officials to urgently prepare a proposal for absorbing NHM staff who have worked for several years on temporary contracts. He also suggested changes in recruitment rules to accommodate the maximum number of eligible workers in a single phase. The minister further directed that a separate proposal for increasing the honorarium of NHM employees should be placed before the state cabinet at the earliest. Similarly, staff working under the Prime Minister's Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) will also be considered for inclusion, with Abitkar asking the Women and Child Welfare Department to expedite a formal govt resolution. In a positive development for frontline health workers, the minister proposed raising payment for Asha (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers from the current Rs5 to Rs20 per task. Additionally, incentives for employees under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana are also being finalised. These decisions are part of a broader initiative to improve workforce motivation and service delivery in the state's public health programs. The meeting regarding this, held in Mumbai, was attended by senior officials, including health secretary Dr Nipun Vinayak, NHM director Dr Nitin Ambadekar, and other key department heads. If implemented, this reform could benefit thousands of contractual workers across Maharashtra and strengthen grassroots health programmes, especially in underserved rural and tribal areas. The NHM staff across the state haven't got salaries for the last three months. They threatened to go on strike over the issue from May 20. However, after this decision, the call to strike was withdrawn. NHM staff union leaders told TOI that they are expecting salaries in June and some concrete on-paper announcement of permanent jobs through govt resolution.

Maternity payout covers just 20% of births, claim activists
NEW DELHI: Right to Food activists have expressed concern over barely 20% of births each year being covered by govt's maternity benefit scheme, despite the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, guaranteeing Rs 6,000 as legal entitlement of all pregnant women. Data given to RS in March showed that only 54 lakh beneficiaries were paid in 2024-25, much lower than almost 73 lakh in 2022-23, but an improvement over 22.5 lakh beneficiaries in 2023-24. The estimated number of births per year in India is 270 lakh. Giving maternity benefit of Rs 6,000 per child for 90% of the 270 lakh births would require an annual expenditure of over Rs 14,500 crore. However, the allocation for the maternity benefit scheme, Prime Minister's Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), has stagnated below Rs 2,000 crore in the last few years. The entitlement has not been revised since 2013, which means in real terms it has gone down after adjusting for inflation. Even by a very conservative estimate, maternity benefits should have been raised to at least Rs 12,000, argued the Right to Food activists. In April 2017, the women and child development ministry told Supreme Court that all pregnant women would receive Rs 6,000 under Section 4 of the NFSA. But instead, the PMMVY was implemented, reducing the benefit to Rs 5,000, restricting it to the first child (or second if it's a girl), and imposing multiple conditionalities. To get Rs 3,000 (first instalment), pregnancy must be registered and one ante-natal check-up done within six months at an approved facility. For Rs 2,000 (second instalment), childbirth must be registered and the child vaccinated with the first cycle of immunisations. Eligibility is limited to disadvantaged women who must prove it with documents like ration or BPL cards. Further, women below age of 18 years and seven months are not eligible. Many documents are required, including Aadhaar card, Aadhaar-mapped bank/post office account details, mobile number, eligibility proof, Mother and Child Protection card or Reproductive and Child Health card, date of last menstrual period, date of ante-natal check-up, child's birth certificate, and child immunisation details. Due to these conditions, most women are excluded. In 2023-24, only 2.7 lakh women (about 1%) received the second instalment. In contrast, Tamil Nadu and Odisha provide Rs 18,000 and Rs 10,000 per pregnancy, with 84% and 64% birth coverage respectively.

PRAGATI meeting: PM Modi reviews 8 projects worth Rs 90,000 crore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reviewed eight development projects spread across the country and costing around Rs 90,000 crore as he chaired the 46th edition of PRAGATI meeting. During the meeting, Modi also reviewed grievance redressal related to Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and directed that all ministries and departments should ensure that the identification of beneficiaries is done strictly through biometrics-based Aadhaar authentication or verification, an official statement said. PRAGATI is a multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation, involving the Centre and state governments. According to the statement, the eight significant projects included three road projects, two projects each of railways and port, shipping and waterways. Modi also directed to explore the potential for integrating additional programmes into the PM Matru Vandana Yojana, specifically those aimed at promoting child care, improving health and hygiene practices, ensuring cleanliness, and addressing other related aspects that contribute to the overall well-being of the mother and newly born child. During the review of an infrastructure project concerning the development of a ring road, Modi emphasised that the development of ring road should be integrated as a key component of broader urban planning efforts. The development must be approached holistically, ensuring that it aligns with and supports the city's growth trajectory over the next 25 to 30 years, he said. He also called for exploring the possibility of integrating a circular rail network within the city's transport infrastructure as a complementary and sustainable alternative for public transportation. During the review of the Jal Marg Vikas Project, Modi said that efforts should be made to establish a strong community connect along the stretches for boosting cruise tourism. It will foster a vibrant local ecosystem by creating opportunities for business development, particularly for artisans and entrepreneurs associated with the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative and other local crafts, the statement said. Modi stressed that such inland waterways should be drivers for tourism also. So far, 370 projects having a total cost of around Rs 20 lakh crore have been reviewed in the PRAGATI meetings.
