Simple trick saving Aussies $5.3bn
Frugal Australian households are saving $315 a year on groceries through buying items close to their expiry date at discount prices, costing the supermarkets collectively $5.3bn. The vast majority of Australians are buying marked-down food items close to their expiry date to save money, ING research shows. ING head of consumer and market insights Matt Bowen said not only was this helping Australians save money, it helped cut down on food waste. 'There are still more opportunities to save though, and with two in five Aussies admitting they've had to leave an item behind at the supermarket checkout because they didn't have enough budget for it, now is a great time to explore more bargains and smart shopping strategies,' he said. Australians are saving on average $315 a year through one trick. NewsWire / Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia Mr Bowen said Australians were looking to save across fresh meat, poultry and seafood, bakery products and fresh produce. In addition to buying items on sale, Aussies could save an extra $1159 annually by ditching the midweek impromptu trip to the grocery store, according to ING. More than half of Aussies often make last-minute trips to buy items outside of their main shop, with 59 per cent admitting they buy more than planned during these trips. The research shows these impromptu shops are costing an average of $97 extra per month. 'With that pesky midweek impromptu trip to the convenience store costing us an extra $97 monthly, and shopping primarily online costing us an extra $904 annually, Aussies have the opportunity to implement other ways to save by finding those sale-ticket items, tweaking their dietary habits and even shopping in-store on a weekday evening,' Mr Bowen said. Meanwhile, Compare the Market research revealed half of Australian shoppers switched to generic brands in the last 12 months, helping them save an average of 41 per cent when comparing the brands. The research found that Victoria was Australia's most frugal state, with 53 per cent of Victorians switching from brand-name products to save money. This compares with the national average of 49 per cent. Australians could save by purchasing nearly expired food. NewsWire / Sarah Marshall Credit: News Corp Australia Households are now spending $213.64 on groceries each week – 11.5 per cent or $21.98 more compared with January 2024, Compare the Market says. Compare the Market general manager Chris Ford said this showed the pressure households were facing. 'Families have been doing it tough for long enough and with high prices in almost every aisle at the supermarket, it's hardly surprising to see so many Australians opting for generic brands over big names,' Mr Ford said. 'Time and time again we see people being stung with high prices because they stay loyal to certain brands and our latest research shows the tide may be turning.' Mr Ford said Australians were switching to generic items across milk (65 per cent), cleaning products (58 per cent), bread (57 per cent), frozen vegetables (52 per cent) and toilet paper (50 per cent). 'These are the common grocery items we simply can't live without, so it makes sense to see so many Australians trying to save money where they can here, and the savings can be significant,' Mr Ford said. 'We crunched the numbers at major supermarkets and found a 50 per cent reduction when opting for a cheaper brand multipurpose cleaner, a 38 per cent saving by switching to home-brand bread, and even a 27 per cent price difference between brand-name and generic-brand milk.

Some ESPN experts favor Lions to make next Super Bowl, others predicting regression
ESPN released early predictions for the 2025-26 NFL season on Friday, some liking the Detroit Lions to make it further while others don't have such high hopes. ESPN's Matt Bowen predicted the Lions would not only make it to the Super Bowl but also win it over the Baltimore Ravens. Eric Moody, Aaron Schatz, and Mike Tannenbaum all predicted the Lions would reach the big game but lose to either the Bills or Ravens. Tannenbaum also threw into his prediction that Lions edge superstar Aidan Hutchinson would win Defensive Player of the Year. DraftKings Sportsbook had the Lions +900 to win the Super Bowl next year as of Saturday. ESPN analysts also made predictions for MVP, offseason wishes, breakout candidates, and regression candidates. No Lions garnered any MVP buzz, but Tannenbaum's offseason wishlist pushed for the Browns to trade edge rusher Myles Garrett to Detroit. Despite those high hopes, multiple analysts predicted the Lions to have a season of regression. Pamela Maldonado, Lindsey Thiry, and Field Yates all predicted the Lions wouldn't have as much success next season. Maldonado and Thiry both cited the team's mass coaching shakeup as a primary concern for seeing the same successes. Yates acknowledged the Lions will still be very good, but perhaps not 15-2 good.

Jaguars 2025 free agency: A lot of defensive back talent available this offseason
Addressing the secondary as a whole, both the cornerback and safety positions, will be on the Jacksonville Jaguars' offseason to-do list. The good news is that if the Jaguars are willing to explore free agency again, the opportunity to add some high end talent should exist. Recently, Matt Bowen of ESPN put together his list of the top 50 NFL free agents for this upcoming 2025 offseason and included were 13 defensive backs–the most of any position group. Some of the names included at the top of Bowen's list were cornerback DJ Reed, cornerback Charvarius Ward, safety Tre'von Moehrig, and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. Last season, the Jaguars' pass defense was often picked apart by opponents. Overall, the Jaguars' finished the 2024 season ranking in the bottom three in interceptions, quarterback passer rating, and yards per attempt allowed, along with ranking 24th in completion rate, according to Pro Football Reference. This is also a unit that could be losing one of their top defenders in terms of ball production, with safety Andre Cisco set to hit free agency. Over the last three seasons, Cisco has generated 11 pass breakups and eight interceptions. From a salary cap standpoint, the Jaguars have over $35 million in available cap space, according to Over the Cap, and that figure does not yet include their rollover amount of unused cap space from 2024, which is one of the higher totals among all teams. And like every other team, the Jaguars have the ability to create more cap space through either contract restructures or veteran cuts. However, before deciding if the Jaguars will explore adding a top free agent to their roster, they must first find a new defensive coordinator and then a general manager. From there, it's about identifying which of those free agent options fits best with what the incoming defensive coordinator wants to run schematically and what the Jaguars are willing to invest cap-wise.
