Illinois to defy Trump voter order for April election

CHICAGO (WGN) — The state of Illinois will defy President Trump's executive order and will not require voters to present identification to receive a ballot in next month's election. President Trump earlier this week issued an executive order calling for all voters to provide proof of citizenship before receiving a ballot. It threatened to pull federal funding from states where election officials don't comply. In response, the Illinois State Board of Elections said voters will only have to sign a statement that they are a citizen as outlined under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. Spokesman Matt Dietrich told Capitol News Illinois that the state does not require voters to show any ID when they vote. Trump signs order seeking to overhaul US elections, including requiring proof of citizenship Pritzker pushes back on 'illegal, extreme' Trump election order Republicans have defended that requirement as necessary to restore public confidence in elections. Voting in federal elections by noncitizens is already illegal and can result in felony charges and deportation. Voting rights groups have expressed concerns that the requirement could disenfranchise people. An estimated 9% of U.S. citizens of voting age, or 21.3 million people, do not have proof of citizenship readily available, according to a 2023 report by the Brennan Center for Justice and other groups. There are also concerns that married women who have changed their names will encounter trouble when trying to register because their birth certificates list their maiden names. Many legal experts say the president's order is likely to face strong legal challenges. Article I, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution gives states the authority to determine the time, places and manner of holding elections, 'but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of (choosing) Senators.' Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker blasted Trump's order hours after it was issued, calling it an 'illegal, extreme, and dangerous attempt to take power away from the American people.' The Associated Press contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Is there an election on Tuesday in Illinois? Depends on where you live

Residents of Illinois in some counties next week will have an election. Do you have an election in your county, and what is on the ballot? Here's what you need to know. Less than 20 counties on Tuesday will hold a Consolidated Municipal Primary Election. Those elections could decide aldermanic positions or village trustees, for example, depending on your city's form of government. This primary is usually only held for municipal governments that are nonpartisan, which is a slim portion of Illinois. More: 33 Illinois counties explore formation of a new state. Here's what could happen Elections will take place in the following counties and city: Adams (42 precincts are holding primaries for both Republican and Democrat offices) Boone (21 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) Champaign (23 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) Cook (114 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat and nonpartisan offices) DeKalb (24 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices. DuPage (105 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) Grundy (12 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) Kane (68 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) Kankakee (11 precincts are holding primaries for the Bourbonnais Citizens Party) Kendall (36 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) Lake (55 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) Livingston (10 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) Logan (13 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) McHenry (130 precincts are holding primaries for Republican offices) Peoria (65 precincts are holding primaries for Republican and nonpartisan offices) Rock Island (34 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) Will (24 precincts are holding primaries for Republican and nonpartisan offices) Winnebago (21 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) City of Rockford (86 precincts are holding primaries for Democrat offices) To learn what office is up for a vote, residents should contact their local County Clerk's office. That could mean more than four candidates are vying for a single, non-partisan office. 'If you have five candidates seeking the office of mayor, then in the consolidated primary, that's where they narrow that down to two candidates,' said Matt Dietrich, who is the spokesperson for the Illinois Board of Elections. The label could also mean there are more than four times the number of candidates when there are multiple vacancies. For example, there may be two open seats on a park board and nine people filed to run. The primary would narrow the field to four candidates.
