Bomb threat forces Spirit Airlines plane evacuation at Detroit Metro Airport
This story has been updated with new information.
A bomb threat forced passengers to evacuate a Spirit Airlines plane headed to Los Angeles from Detroit Metro Airport on Thursday, June 5.
The incident was first reported about 7 a.m., said Matt Morawski, Wayne County Airport Authority communications director, in an email.
Law enforcement was asked to meet the LAX-bound flight ahead of its departure for "a potential security issue," Spirit Airlines officials said in a statement.
It was a bomb threat, and the Wayne County Airport Authority and the Transportation Security Administration responded, the authority confirmed in a statement.
'As a precaution, all passengers were safely deplaned and transported by bus to the Evans Terminal,' the authority stated.
The aircraft was taxied to a remote location, inspected and cleared by law enforcement, Spirit Airlines officials stated. The passengers were also rescreened.
"The safety of our Guests and Team Members is our top priority, and we are working to get our Guests to their destination as soon as possible," the airline stated.
The incident is under investigation, and further information was not immediately available.
