Certain batches of Matt Reilly Cakes Iced Jam Bakes were found to contain wheat, a common allergen and source of gluten, which is not declared on the list of ingredients. This means those those with wheat allergies or gluten intolerance may unknowingly consume them and fall ill. While the cakes are safe for most people, they could cause digestive issues or more serious reactions in those with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance or wheat allergies. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued a "do not eat" alert for affected consumers, saying: "Wheat (cereals containing gluten) is not declared on the ingredients list of Matt Reilly Cakes Iced Jam Bakes. This may make the product unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (wheat), and, therefore, these consumers should not eat the product." The recall affects all batches and all best-before dates where "flour" is listed in the ingredients without the required emphasis on wheat as an allergen. The FSAI confirmed that the affected batches are being recalled.
