Construction resumes on Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — There's some exciting news for Siouxlanders: the Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge that will connect Iowa to South Dakota has officially resumed construction. The project was delayed due to the June flooding of the Big Sioux River, as well as some permitting issues. With construction underway, the pedestrian bridge in Sioux City is planned to be just north of Interstate 29 and will connect approximately 50 miles of recreational trails once complete. 18th Street in Sioux City to temporarily close Matt Salvatore with Sioux City Parks and Recreation told KCAU 9 that he was upset by the project's delay, but is excited that it's back on track. 'Yeah, it was disappointing last year due to flooding, due to some permitting issues, that we had to shut that project down last year' Salvatore said. 'But it's awesome to see the progress right now with the old bridge going away and the crews on site, currently cranes on site, and we're seeing lots of progress. That's going to be a huge addition to connect the trail networks of Sioux City and Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.' Completion of the Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge is currently set for Sept. 10.
