David Knowles to join SF Chronicle as Deputy Opinion Editor

From Editorial Page Editor Matthew Fleischer: The San Francisco Chronicle is delighted to announce that David Knowles will be joining the Opinion team as its new deputy editor. In his role, Knowles will be responsible for curating the paper's op-ed contributions. He will also be a member of the editorial board, helping to make crucial decisions about who the Chronicle supports during its political endorsement process. Knowles comes to the Chronicle from Yahoo News, where he was a senior editor and reporter with an emphasis on climate change. Prior to that he was a politics editor for Bloomberg News and the West Coast correspondent for the New York Daily News. Earlier in his career, Knowles set off a national scandal when he broke the news that ammonia-filled 'pink slime' was being added to school lunch meat. 'It's so rare to be able to find someone with David's combination of editing, writing and audience experience,' said Editorial Page Editor Matthew Fleischer. 'I couldn't be more excited to see the kinds of intriguing stories he's going to bring to light in our op-ed pages.' A longtime Bay Area resident, Knowles grew up in San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighborhood. In addition to his work in journalism, Knowles is the author of two novels, 'The Secrets of the Camera Obscura' and 'The Third Eye.' An active musician, his current projects include The Black Marshmallows and Test Quartet. 'After more than two decades on the news side of journalism, I'm thrilled to be moving to the San Francisco Chronicle to work on the editorial page,' said Knowles. 'I look forward to joining an incredibly talented team of editors and reporters who continue to the standard for local news coverage. Knowles will start at the Chronicle on June 16.
