Matthäus believes Kimmich will beat his Germany caps record
Germany's Joshua Kimmich speaks during the press conference of the German national soccer team, ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Nations League semi-final soccer match against Portugal. Federico Gambarini/dpa Lothar Matthäus believes Joshua Kimmich has the potential to break his Germany caps record. Matthäus racked up 150 appearances for West Germany/Germany and Kimmich, 30, will pick up his 100th cap in the Nations League semi-final against Portugal in Munich on Wednesday. Advertisement "I said years ago, if anyone can catch up with me, it's Joshua. And I stand by that. He's still young, rarely injured and very ambitious. If he keeps going like this, he can reach 170 international caps," Matthäus told the Bild newspaper on Tuesday. The 1990 World Cup winner also wrote in a column for Sky: "I would be happy for him if he eventually breaks my record of 150 appearances." Kimmich has mainly operated at right back for Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann despite playing for Bayern Munich in midfield. Matthäus would like to see him in the centre of the park for Germany again. Advertisement "Kimmich is world-class as a right back and in midfield. I think he's most effective in the middle, where he dictates the rhythm of the game. As a right back, he's not as involved in the build-up," the 64-year-old said. "But Julian Nagelsmann doesn't have another player who fits the requirements for the right back position. I don't see another convincing solution there either."

Matthäus gives Bayern sporting director Eberl a C minus despite title
German former football player Lothar Matthaeus takes part in a media discussion with a betting provider about the second half of the season. Peter Kneffel/dpa Top German pundit Lothar Matthäus has rated Bayern Munich's season as only "satisfactory" despite their Bundesliga title, while sporting director Max Eberl received a C minus. Although their Bundesliga showing was worth an A or B, Matthäus wrote in his Sky column, the team's performance in the cup competitions was not good enough. Advertisement Matthäus gave coach Vincent Kompany a B for his work in his first season at Bayern, but Eberl came in for criticism. "The assessment of Eberl is not just about the sporting side of things, but also about how he represents the club to the outside world as sporting director," said Matthäus. His statements about Leroy Sané on Saturday and Thomas Müller in January had "caused great confusion on the outside and unrest within the club," Germany's record appearance maker and former Bayern star added. Eberl had inferred club icon Müller would be staying only to later agree he should leave in June. The sporting director also said Sané was about to pen a new deal, only for the player to switch agents and leave his extension up in the air. Furthermore, although France winger Michael Olise was a very good purchase, "not all of his transfers have worked out," Matthäus said.

Ex-Bayern star Matthäus can see Müller playing in the United States
Ex-Bayern star Matthäus can see Müller playing in the United States Munich's Thomas Mueller (C) celebrates scoring his side's first goal with his teammates during the UEFA Champions League quarter final first leg soccer match between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan at Allianz Arena. Tom Weller/dpa Former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthäus has recommended club icon Thomas Müller considers a move to the United States. Müller, 35, will leave Bayern in June after the club decided not to offer him a contract extension following almost 25 years of service. Advertisement "It's not my place to advise him, but Thomas Müller has so many possibilities, especially abroad. I can very well imagine him in the MLS (Major League Soccer), I had the experience myself," Matthäus said. "As a life experience, it would be a great step," he added. After an illustrious career in Europe with the likes of Bayern and Inter Milan, Matthäus made one final stop in the US, where he played for the New York Red Bulls in 2000-2001, who back then were known as the Metro Stars. "I see two teams for him in the US: New York Red Bulls, where he's already on the East coast, where you have shorter flight times to Munich. Or I see him at Bayern's partner club, Los Angeles FC," Matthäus said. Advertisement Bayern and Los Angeles launched a joint venture in 2023 to develop young football talents. Matthäus also said that a move by Germany international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen to Bayern looks likely despite the very high transfer fee. "(Bayern honorary president) Uli Hoeness wants it and he fulfills his wishes at Bayern. Besides, he's been in contact with the Wirtz family for a while, this isn't a secret," Matthäus said. Hoeness has repeatedly made it clear that he wants Wirtz at Bayern. The player has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027 and a market value of more than €100 million ($111 million).
