Watch: Emiliano Martinez sent off in what could be final game for Aston Villa

Emiliano Martínez was shown a straight red card for a thumping body-check on Rasmus Hojlund, in what is expected to be his last outing as an Aston Villa player. The moment of madness could also prove costly for the club in more than one sense, with Villa scrapping hard to secure a Champions League place for next season – and if they should fail in their pursuit of a top-five finish it could have troubling ramifications for the club, with the threat of them breaching profitability and sustainability rules looming. After a terrible back-pass from full-back Matty Cash at Old Trafford ran right into the path of the Danish striker, the Argentine goalkeeper came storming out of his area and collided with him. Martínez made no attempt to play the ball and with Hojlund facing no other defenders, he could have manufactured a shot on goal had he rounded the goalkeeper. Madness from Emi Martinez 🤯 A poor backpass from Cash, Hojlund jumps on to it, and as he tries to round Martinez, the Argentinian stopper takes him out and is dismissed 🟥 📺 @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) May 25, 2025 After the the Video Assistant Referee upheld the decision by Thomas Bramall to show a red card, Martínez trudged off towards the tunnel. Martínez was seen in tears at the end of Villa's final home game of the season, against Tottenham, and his future with the club remains uncertain. His sending off also meant that Marco Asensio, Spain's Euro 2024 winner, signed on loan from Paris St-Germain, had to be taken off to make way for goalkeeper Robin Olsen. The Spaniard is also expected not to play for Villa again. Should Villa not make the Champions League for next season the club may have to sell other talents. Al-Nassr, the Saudi Pro League club have been mooted as a potential next club for Martínez should he leave, however he is said to prefer staying in European football. Hojlund thought he had scored a goal immediately after the half-time break, heading in from a corner, but the officials ruled it out for offside.

Bournemouth 0-1 Aston Villa - the fans' verdict

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Bournemouth and Aston are some of your comments:Bournemouth fansSam: Credit to Villa - they kept us quiet, created chances and deserved to win in the end. I was hoping we might nick a goal but not to be. Here's hoping Europe is not a step too far as ultimately for all the good results, it would end up being a disappointing season considering where we have been in the table at times. Come on Cherries, let's attack these final two games with all we have got and then what will be will be. At least we could end the season knowing we have given it our all. Peter: Just one question - how on arth did Tyrone Mings get away with that elbow? Blatant violent conduct - straight red Bournemouth couldn't get into any rhythm, Villa did a great job stopping Bournemouth attacking. They deserved the Possibly Bournemouth's worst display of the season. Passes went astray, dead ball situations wasted and, until the final 10 minutes, an untypical lack of Villa fansJonny: Matty Cash stole man of the match with that goalline clearance at the death. He performed admirably, shutting down Bournemouth's attack all game. Ollie Watkins taking Gabriel Agbonlahor's record is an achievement well earned by his time at Villa. One step closer to the Champions League!Simon: Substance over style. The points are more important than the performances at this point of the season. So pleased for Ollie Watkins getting our Premier League goals Great three points for the Villa after a very hard fought game against a very good Bournemouth side. We defended very well and could have had another couple of goals. A vital win and two more to go that hopefully will see us back in the Champions Great three points for the Villa. Very hard fought game against a very good Bournemouth side. We defended very well and could have had another couple of goals. Vital win, two more to go, which hopefully will see us back in the Champions League.

Aston Villa vs Paris Saint-Germain predictions: Champions League tips and odds

Our expert has three tips for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park this evening (8pm kick-off), which include another card for Matty Cash. Read on for his insights. Aston Villa vs PSG tips Odds courtesy of Betano. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. If you already have a Betano account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for the midweek football action, check out our list of the best free bets. PSG can extend unbeaten run The Villans have lost only twice at home this season, with the last of those defeats back in October. Since then, they have gone 17 games unbeaten at Villa Park, winning 11 and drawing six. That undefeated streak now looks set to receive its biggest test. PSG won the first leg 3-1, will be motivated to kill off this tie and are unbeaten in 17 away days, last losing on the road in November. This fixture looks likely to be competitive, with Villa having scored in their previous 15 home games. A small bet builder composed of PSG avoiding defeat in the double-chance market, with both teams to score, looks to be relatively low-risk. Visitors will fire in more shots We provided a successful tip in the first leg when we backed PSG in the shots market and they delivered with a total of 29 efforts. This beat the 27 that the French champions recorded when they hosted Liverpool at the Parc des Princes. In the second leg of the quarter-final clash against the Reds, they fired in another 21 efforts at goal. PSG take a two-goal lead into this match, yet we cannot see them trying to shut up shop. If our prediction of a competitive encounter proves to be true, the visitors look good value to have at least 17 shots. Cash faces another difficult night Aston Villa right back Matty Cash was booked in the first leg, when he was up against the flying PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. It was the defender's seventh yellow card of the season and we think that he is a likely contender to pick up another booking. PSG have had a week to rest before this second leg, so the Georgia international wide man should be raring to go, while the sometimes reckless Cash was in action over the weekend in Villa's 3-0 win at Southampton. 🎥 Matty Cash shares special moment with sister after Villa loss ♥

It was a tough night in the Parc des Princes for Matty Cash coming up against the red hot Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and being substituted at half-time having already been booked. However, it was still a very special night for the player as well as his entire family. Not only was the 27-year-old playing in the biggest game of his career, but he was also interviewed after the game by his own sister, Hannah, a reporter for CBS Sports. A heartwarming and humorous moment for all involved.
