Cardinals Sign Former Yankees Southpaw to Minor League Deal
Cardinals Sign Former Yankees Southpaw to Minor League Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have signed left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek to a minor league deal on Tuesday. Advertisement The 34-year-old was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees on May 16 after spending nearly a month with the squad, starting on April 22. In 6 1/3 innings pitched across seven outings for the Yankees, Matzek carried a 4.26 ERA, allowing three runs on 11 hits and five walks while striking out seven. The once-reliable Atlanta Brave has only seen 16 1/3 innings of work on big league mounds since the conclusion of the 2022 season. An October 2022 Tommy John surgery left him out for the entirety of 2023 and the southpaw had trouble bouncing back with the Braves last season. After heading back to the IL, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants before being released and returning to the Braves organization on a minor league deal but failing to return to the majors before season's end. Matzek carries a career ERA of 3.73 with 279 strikeouts in 291 2/3 innings across 175 big league appearances. His most notable stretch came in the 2021 postseason, where he was lights out for the World Series-winning Braves, allowing just four runs in 24 1/3 innings across 20 appearances. Yankees bullpen shakeup sends veteran lefty to free agency
Tyler Matzek's brief time in the Bronx has ended, at least for now. The Yankees announced Monday that the veteran left-hander cleared waivers and has rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A. Instead, Matzek will test free agency, leaving the door open for a new opportunity with another club or a potential reunion with the Yankees on a minor league deal. The 34-year-old southpaw was designated for assignment last week to make room for the return of Jonathan Loaisiga, who came off the injured list after missing the start of the season because of Tommy John surgery. Loaisiga has looked sharp in his first appearances back, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. His return immediately strengthened a Yankees bullpen that's been searching for consistency. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek© Dave Nelson-Imagn Images Matzek, meanwhile, struggled to find his footing in New York. In 6 1/3 innings, he allowed just three runs but did so while giving up 11 hits and issuing five walks. While he struck out 20% of the batters he faced (seven of 35), his inability to limit traffic on the bases raised concerns. Advertisement A former first-round draft pick and top prospect, Matzek's career has been a roller coaster of early promise, dominant stretches, and persistent injury setbacks. He enjoyed a remarkable resurgence with the Braves in 2020 and 2021, pitching to a combined 2.64 ERA over 92 innings and playing a key role in Atlanta's 2021 World Series run. But shoulder issues and Tommy John surgery in 2022 derailed his progress. There were signs of life during his time with the Yankees. His fastball averaged 94.5 miles per hour, down from his peak of 96 mph in 2021, but noticeably improved from his pre-surgery velocity. After missing the entire 2023 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, he was hoping for a fresh start in pinstripes. Matzek got his next opportunity at the MLB level with the Atlanta Braves in 2020. There, he developed into a dominant left-handed reliever. Yankees call up Tyler Matzek for intriguing new bullpen option

Try it free CLEVELAND — The veteran non-roster arm that had the Yankees buzzing this spring has finally arrived. The Yankees on Tuesday selected the contract of lefty reliever Tyler Matzek, whose strong camp was sidetracked by an oblique strain that he has since recovered from and thrown in five minor league games. Yoendrys Gómez, who threw three innings Monday night and is out of minor league options, was designated for assignment to make room on the roster. The 25-year-old righty had a 2.70 ERA through six games but had walked nine and struck out only five across 10 innings. The Yankees called up Tyler Matzek on Tuesday. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The 34-year-old Matzek, who won a World Series with the Braves in 2021, looked sharp early in camp to get the attention of the Yankees. He is now more than two years removed from Tommy John surgery, and while he got back to the big leagues last season, he did not pitch like himself and also dealt with elbow inflammation. But Matzek's fastball ticked up this spring, more in line with the velocity he had pre-elbow surgery, and now he will be another lefty weapon for manager Aaron Boone to use out of the bullpen. The Yankees now have three lefty relievers in Matzek, Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough. The veteran Yarbrough offers length and has looked solid since the Yankees signed him to a major league deal a few days before Opening Day. He was also fresher than Gómez, which may have factored into the decision as the Yankees near the end of a 13-day, 13-game stretch in which their bullpen has been asked to shoulder a heavy load.

Yankees reliever Tyler Matzek dealing with oblique injury
Yankees reliever Tyler Matzek has an oblique strain, which could threaten his availability for Opening Day. Pitching coach Matt Blake told The New York Post that the team could "potentially" be without Matzek (a non-roster invite) when they break camp, and that they want to make sure he has a "true buildup" in order to get ready for the regular season. Matzek, 34, has pitched in just 11 big league games since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2022. From 2020 to 2022, he was a stalwart in the Braves' bullpen, posting a 2.92 ERA (3.34 FIP) and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 156 batters (10.3 per nine) in 135.2 innings over 132 appearances. New York's bullpen will be led by newly-acquired closer Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, and should also include Ian Hamilton, Mark Leiter Jr., and Tim Hill. In addition to Matzek, the relief corps is dealing with injuries to Jake Cousins, JT Brubaker, and Scott Effross. The right-hander has not pitched in games this spring due to offseason shoulder tightness and will start the season on the injured list. Beeter, who is on New York's 40-man roster, hopes to get into minor-league rehab games in April, per Randy Miller. The 26-year-old appeared in three games with the Yanks last year, his first taste of big league action, allowing two runs on four hits in 3.2 innings with a walk and five strikeouts. He pitched to a 2.25 ERA and 1.083 WHIP over 10 games (seven starts) and 36.0 innings during 2024 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
